Since school started, classroom teachers have been hosting class meetings with their students. Class Meetings can be check-ins, community building activities, as well as opportunities to teach our Panther Pledges. Beginning this Monday or next, teachers will begin to incorporate Second Step lessons into their Class Meetings.
The Second Step curriculum teaches students the Social Emotional Learning standards in a developmentally appropriate way. Please see the following link for more information: https://www.isbe.net/Pages/Social-Emotional-Learning-Standards.aspx. The curriculum aligns with our Panther Pledges of Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. Each month has a theme. The themes are Setting the Stage, Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, Problem Solving, and Friendship Skills. For these first few weeks, we have been Setting the Stage by reviewing our Panther Pledges of Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Our school-wide theme for October is Skills for Learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. In our morning announcements, we’ll be reminding students of these skills, which help students be successful learners. There are Home Links that provide take-home activities to reinforce social-emotional skills and show family members what kids learn in Second Step. Your child's classroom teacher will communicate when and how they will be sending the Home Links.
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out with questions!
Here are the timeframes:
- Kindergarten-1st Grade: 12:30-1:30 pm (1st grade’s day will end at 12:15 on 9/28 to accommodate this timeframe.)
- 2nd Grade-3rd Grade: 1:30-2:30
- 4th Grade-5th Grade: 2:30-3:30
- Any Grade Level: 3:30-5:00
Please read the document below for more information and the process.
Monday Afternoon Information
Just a reminder that this coming Monday, September 28 Remote Learning ends at 1pm. As a parent, if you are looking for resources for your child after 1pm please refer to Monday Afternoon Opportunities. These activities are suggestions for independent time on Monday afternoons. The afternoon time does not need to be structured. Families may add their own ideas. These activities do not need to be submitted to the classroom teacher. Because of the amount of technology used during the rest of the week we included all no screen time options. If families are interested, they can access Dreambox, Lexia and other software students use during remote learning. Teachers will be using this valuable time for professional development and team collaboration so they can best meet the needs of their students. We have already learned a lot in our short two weeks in school.
