# Ripley Central School Elementary

## Gardening Day - YOU are invited!

We will have a Gardening Day this Saturday, May 21st, to prepare and plant our school garden. Students and families can come help anytime from 9:00 AM to

12 noon. Please bring gardening tools if you have them. We are also looking for compost to add to our raised beds.

Third grade students have been showing grit and zest while working with tangrams. The students learned to analyze the relationship between the tangram pieces. They were also able to solve puzzles using their tangram pieces. Through discussions they discussed whether or not there was more than one way to compose a given polygon. Also they described strategies while using the attributes of each polygon. Way to go 3rd grade!

## Mathematics - Sixth Grade Style

In 6th grade math we have been learning about mean, median, MAD, and IQR. The students in 6th grade are able to define each of those key vocabulary words. We have been taking a data set and then calculating the mean, median, MAD, and IQR. The students have found this both challenging and fun. We have done a lot of partner work then individual calculations so that we can talk through some of the problems and practice them independently. That helps us to know that we understand these concepts.

## "Oh, say, can you see?"

Warm spring weather means it's baseball season! Baseball is America's pastime, and a ball game just wouldn't be right if it didn't start with our National Anthem. Ripley Elementary Chorus was honored to have been invited to perform the National Anthem for the Westfield Little League's opening day ceremonies on Saturday, May 7th. They also will be opening the game for the Erie SeaWolves Education Day game on Thursday, June 2nd! We are so grateful and excited to have these wonderful opportunities to sing and share our voices with the community.

## What would make our community healthier?

We welcome all Ripley residents and business owners to attend a Community Conversation. Share your ideas for building a healthier community!

Friday, June 3, 4:30 to 6:30 PM

Free dinner will be provided.

Location: RIPLEY CENTRAL SCHOOL CAFETERIA

12 North State Street, Ripley, NY 14775

RSVP for dinner by May 31 to Shelly Wells 338-0010 x 1209

We will begin our Community Conversation with student presentations on their health and wellness efforts. Later, while the adults are engaged in the Community Conversation, there will be age appropriate physical activity events for students.

The sixth graders are currently exploring digital tools in expeditions. The students were introduced to Google Classroom and Google apps. They practiced submitting assignments, creating schedules, and revising their writing. After finding out how useful technology could be in their daily lives, the students complete activities on digitalpassport.org, learning how to use the digital tools at their disposal safely.

At this time the 6th graders are watching Public Service Announcements, breaking apart professional models to determine the most effective production, script, acting and text to share what they have learned. Their final product will be a PSA on cell phone use, privacy, creative commons, searching, or cyber-bullying. Keep your eyes peeled for their PSAs in the near future.
