Gift a Love for Reading
Last month we talked about how cooking with kids can create a language-rich environment for your child. This month we are going to talk about another amazing way to infuse your home with language, BOOKS! Reading is a great way to add a variety of language to your home! Your child is never too young to listen to books. Research shows that even reading to your child in utero can have benefits on your bond with your baby and their early language development. For newborns, listening to their parents read can be a soothing and calming experience. Young infants can also benefit from looking at books with pictures that have black and white contrasting colors. As children start to become older, incorporating touch and feel books can increase their fine motor development by encouraging them to reach and touch the different textures throughout the book. Another way to increase fine motor development through reading is by encouraging your child to help turn the pages of the sturdy board books. Board books and picture books come in so many different shapes and sizes, with themes that range from animals to colors to holidays. There are even books to encourage potty-training or discuss social-emotional topics such as feelings, or becoming a big brother or sister. There are books to help prepare your child for taking a family trip or prepping for a big move or other life event. Creating a home library, and having different spaces throughout your home where your child has access to a variety of different books, just as they would toys, can be encouraging and promote a lifelong love for reading. While creating a home library can seem like a daunting process, the public library is a great way to incorporate books into your home at no cost. The library is a wonderful resource that will allow you to change out the books in your home on a regular basis for free!

Looking Ahead at January
January brings a lot of exciting events. Our parent group on the 8th will be about Joint Attention and sharing experiences with one another. This group will focus on strategies you can use with your child to encourage those skills. Then on the 11th, we're excited to welcome you back to Toddler Town! Our pretend town will have several spots for you and your child to explore and engage in some imaginative play together. Some favorite spots from last year were the grocery store, construction zone, child care center, and library. We're looking forward to seeing you there and sharing the other parts of the neighborhood with you! Our Stay & Play: Winter Wonderland will be held on the 21st. We'll be bringing some fun winter activities in from the outside. And finally, on the 27th, our Baby Bunch invites those families with kiddos under 2 years of age to come and play together.
