Leroy's Life before Ball
Leroy Robert Paige may have been born July 7th, 1906 to Lula and John Paige. Leroy Robert Paige got the nickname “Satchel” when he was a kid. He carried satchels at the train depot so his mother started calling him Satchel. Paige grew up on Bascombe Street with his 12 brothers and sisters. At the age of 12 Leroy had several brushes with the law, he tried to steal a suitcase and toy rings. He got sent to Mount Meigs Reform school for six years. (the rest of his childhood) He couldn’t leave until his 18th birthday. In 1934, he married his first spouse Janet Howard. They divorced in 1943. He got married again to Lahoma Brown on October 12th, 1947. Leroy Robert Paige passed away June 8th, 1982.

Satchel Paige was considered the best pitcher in the negro leagues. Leroy got inducted into the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown, New york August 9th. Satchel found his love of baseball at the reform school he was sent to. Paige’s first ever team was the semi-professional Mobile Tigers. He played on this team with his brother Wilson. Satchel loved baseball so much he spent more time traveling and doing baseball stuff than hanging out with his family. Satchel always had a gift for throwing which helped him through the years to become the world’s best pitcher.
