The Southside Scoop
May 2022
IMPORTANT INFO
Our next school board meeting will take place on Monday, May 2nd at the Houlton Middle/High School auditorium at 6:00pm.
We will be celebrating Staff Appreciation Week from May 2-6. It has been a very challenging year for everyone, and we certainly want our staff to know how much they are appreciated in everything they do for our students at Southside.
We will be having an early release day on Wednesday, May 11th. Dismissal will be at 11:30am. Bagged lunches will be sent home with students who sign up for school lunch.
Our robotics club will be participating in a competition on Saturday, May 14th. We are very excited to have this opportunity as it has not been available these past couple of years. Further details will be sent home with our robotics club participants by Mr. Jurson, the coach. We wish them good luck as they have been working very hard to prepare for this fun day.
We will be having a spring Open House at Southside on Thursday, May 19th from 6-7pm where our parents/guardians and families can join our students by popping in during the hour to tour the building, check out your child's classroom(s), and meet their teachers.
There will be NO school for students on Friday, May 20th due to a staff workshop day.
Word of the Year....PATIENCE.
STUDENT COUNCIL CORNER
Our student council is bringing back our Walking Wednesdays but more in the format of an after school club. Permission slips will be required and are available in the office. The club will meet after school on Wednesdays out on our playground. Special themes will be announced for each walk. A snack will also be provided. We will begin on Wednesday, May 4th. All participating students will have to be picked up at 3:30pm unless they attend ASP. They will join their daily ASP programming and come home on the ASP bus.
State Testing
Grade 3: May 3-5 (Reading, Math, and Language)
Grade 4: May 10-12 (Reading, Math, and Language)
Grade 5: May 4-6 (Science)
May 16-18 (Reading, Math, and Language)
Please make sure that your child is in attendance and on time during their testing days as we find it cuts down on testing anxiety and makes for less distractions in the classroom as the testing session begins promptly. A good night's sleep the night before and a healthy breakfast that morning are also beneficial to our students.
While we encourage our students to try their best, we also recognize that this testing experience is only a snapshot for student understanding and skill. The testing results will help us better understand the progress of our students along with guiding us through a process to review and improve curriculum.
