LESSONS FROM A FALLEN KING
The book "Disciplines of a Godly Man" is filled with excellent practical advise on ways to be more successful as a father, leader, and husband. However, there are many practical applications for both men and women.
I got to page 23 in the book and there was a title that caught my eye "Lessons from a Fallen King." This segment was on King David at the height of his career. I have always been fascinated by David's story but he allowed five key areas affect how his leadership would be lessened.
As we know, David was known for having a brave heart, being full of joy, and having charisma that attracted people to him. What changed? The next five things are areas in which he began to fail - each of which can serve as a valuable point of reflection for our own leadership and lives.
1. Desensitization: David progressively embraced socially permitted sensuality that desensitized him to God's call.
2. Relaxation: David was known for his high level of discipline; however, in his fifties he began to become lax and vulnerable to complacency.
3. Fixation: When David's discipline began to fail he began to become fixated on his sin; however not recognizing it as sin due to his Desentization. (most of the time this happens unknowingly to us)
4. Rationalization: Once David became fixated on his sin he began to rationalize his thoughts and behaviors and slowly separated himself form his fellow believers.
5. Degeneration: David's choices ultimately led to the failure of himself and a national decline.
This is such a great example of the cyclical process that we can get into as Christians if we let our human nature and worldly desires take root over the will of God in our lives.
I will leave you with this quote that I took down a couple of years ago while I was at the NWA Summit when Rick Forbus spoke. He said:
"The #1 Failure in Leadership is Character; not competence." - Rick Forbus
I hope these thoughts challenge you this week as they did me. Lead NWA well this week!
