BIS Newsletter Week 9 Term 2
Friday 2nd July 2021
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
A week out from the end of term 2 it is important to reflect on how students have continued to learn and take part in all areas of school life. We hope that your child has made the most of their first half of intermediate and has embraced all the different activities that we have to offer here at Birkdale Intermediate School.
This term students at BIS have been a part of; sports days, Mathex and writers festivals, they've written speeches and conducted science fair experiments, they have sung with other schools and danced across the Kiri Te Kanawa theatre stage, they have built robots, phone stands, cooked pancakes and apple crumble, they have raised money for others, solved challenging maths problems, the list goes on! Every day there is something new and different happening across our school to help engage our students and provide them with quality opportunities outside of the regular classroom curriculum. A huge thanks to all of our staff who work tirelessly with our students, during work hours as well as in their lunch breaks, tea breaks, before and after school. Quality and committed staff such as these is what helps set Birkdale Intermediate School apart from the others, and our staff always go above and beyond for our tamariki!
Today, we hosted the second annual community Matariki Festival here at BIS. We were very proud of our students. They demonstrated their school values with pride. Whānaungatanga (belonging), Manaakitanga (selflessness), Riki rikatanga (enthusiasm) and their Mahi Tahi (teamwork) in hosting our local Primary Schools and Birkenhead College and what an amazing display of community we saw. It was amazing to watch as each school's Kapa Haka group performed with mana and demonstrated a sense of pride in our culture. We were so proud of our own group who once again performed exceptionally. Again; this wouldn't have happened without the support and aroha of some of our talented staff. Events like these don't just happen, and the 100's of hours of organisation and logistics have meant a seamless and professional event. A huge thanks to our local whānau, schools and community who support us 100%.
Yesterday a report on attainment was sent home with your child. Teachers have spent time working with your child to assess their current skill level in order to be able to teach the next steps in each subject. We look forward to meeting with you all next week at our Parent/Teacher Interviews and discussing any celebrations or concerns you may have. See further below for more details on how to book, or contact the office, where someone will be able to help you book a time slot.
Term 2 ends on Friday the 9th of July and we hope you all have some exciting plans for the school break and are able to enjoy time with your wonderful children. Please make sure you take this time to enjoy the break, as Term 3 brings with it many new and exciting activities and topics to cover and we will see you all back, safe and sound on Monday the 26th of July.
Ngā mihi nui,

Newsletter proudly sponsored by
Mama's Donuts Fundraiser
Birkdale Intermediate School is starting a fundraising drive to help purchase or improve areas or items in our school that our tamariki need to support their goals.
Our first fundraiser is to raise funds to purchase and install a water bottle refilling station. We think this is a great project as all students will benefit from this and it will push the message of drinking water.
To support this we will be running a ‘Mamas Donuts’ fundraiser where you can purchase a pack of mamas donuts in 4 donuts for $12, 8 donuts for $24, or 12 donuts or $36. You can pay for these using Kindo, or online 12-3035-0413925-01 ref Name and Donuts.
These can be picked up on the afternoon of Thursday the 8th of July from the school hall (between 4-8pm) or if you are unable to collect them on the night, we can send them home with your child on Friday the 9th of July.
Please email rreti@bis.school.nz by Monday the 5th of July to place an order. Or drop your order form into school.
The Tania Dalton Foundation - BOOST
The programme is run over three days during the holiday’s giving year 7 & 8 girls the opportunity to try nine different sports and physical activities. We have coaches from different sporting codes come in and take the girls for a session. We understand not all girls want to play a sport, so we also include activities such as Dance, CrossFit, Boxing for Fitness and Spin classes, showing the girls there are other ways to be physically active.
We would love to see the Girls who like sport or want to be more active but not sure where to start or what they might enjoy doing.
There is no cost to attend the Programme, but Girls will have to apply as we have limited numbers.
