Baseball Team wins Sectional
In an unseasonably hot Memorial Day showdown for the crown, the Indians came ready to make a statement in the first inning..scoring two runs in their first at bat. Defensively, UC were fired up after shutting down the Rebels in the bottom of the first to hold on to a 2-0 lead.
Randolph Southern took advantage of some UC mistakes to steal a 3-2 lead going into the fourth inning. Union City answered back with a pair of two-run innings in the fifth and sixth to hold a 6-3 advantage and just three outs away from victory.
The Rebels were not going down without a fight…evening up the contest at 6-6 and sending the game into extra-innings.
“They were able to take advantage of a few of our mistakes and keep it close until the end,” said UC head coach Bill Bradbury. “They never gave up.”
Union City was able to regain the lead in the top of the eighth and claim the championship by a final score of 8-6. The win marked the first since 2012 and only Union City’s second sectional baseball title in school history.
“In the past we tended to kinda give up when things looked bad, but not anymore,” the coach noted. “So proud of how we handled ourselves after some mistakes and were able to regain our composure and win. Now its time to see just how far we can go!”
Indians won the first game at the Carroll Regional on Saturday 2-1 over Covington and then lost to a very good Daleville team in the Championship game that evening.
