Cedar Grove Friday Flash
December 15, 2023
Dear Cedar Grove Families:
Our annual Holiday Shop and our first Movie Night were held this week, and both events were a great success. The children had opportunities to visit the Holiday Shop with their class during the week, and they enjoyed browsing or purchasing items. Movie Night provided a fun and relaxing night out with the family and included popcorn, snacks, and drinks. Many thanks to our PTA and chairpersons, Mrs. Remsnyder (Holiday Shop) and Mrs. Lorey (Movie Night), for planning and organizing these wonderful events. Also, many thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped to make these events possible. We could not do this without you, and we are so grateful for all that you do for our school community.
As we are approaching the end of 2023, we will soon be planning for the coming year now that the 2024-2025 school year calendar has been finalized. The calendar, which was recently approved by the MCPS Board of Education, is responsive to community input by offering limited instructional disruptions and highlighting the system’s continued investment in our employees with the professional development learning days. Read more for key dates.
Our students' composting efforts continue to contribute to our Green School efforts, and we are pleased to share that students were able to divert 455 pounds of food from landfills and incinerators in the month of November.
Please continue to view upcoming events and school closures in both the PTA information section and under the months section at the end of each newsletter. We hope our children will enjoy Pajama Day, the Damascus Marching Band, and our annual Winter Sing Along on Friday, December 22. Please note this is for students and staff only.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Chromebooks for Home Use
Cedar Grove is using a cart model for Chromebooks this year which means Chromebooks stay in the classroom and do not go home. For those of you who would like an MCPS home use device, please complete the Chromebook Form to Distribute to Families to request a home use Chromebook. The purpose is to give Cedar Grove students the access they need for instruction if they do not have a personal or home device. Staff at central office will monitor the requests through the form submissions, will prepare a device, assign it to your student, and will deliver it to Cedar Grove. We will distribute it to the student. As you can imagine, the process takes some time, which is why we are asking you to put in your request so that you have the device when your student needs it. The home use device is to be kept at home for the academic year. Requesting the device implies consent of use in accordance with MCPS policy (IGT-RA) and acknowledgement that the Chromebook, software, and issued peripherals are owned by MCPS.

From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Media Specialist
As difficult it may be to believe, we only have a week left in 2023! As the Holiday Shop closes today, Mr. Jansson's Winter Wonderland during PE classes is starting! Next Friday is our Winter Singalong, so we're asking our students to wear their pajamas to school. It has been an incredible year so far, and I know it will just get better! We also hope you're enjoying our morning news show every day which gives you an idea of all the activities Cedar Grove is up to! I've updated the December Media Monthly so you can explore the various events that are being planned for the new year, as well as the new books we're processing, and of course get some info on those Makerspace media lessons which I think our classes are enjoying! Have a great weekend!
