Some session highlights:
Body Image and Self-Esteem
This workshop will focus on ways to value self and believing others appreciate us for who we are and enjoy our company. Showing ways how youth can create a positive attitude and avoiding negative attitudes: perfectionism, comparing, highly critical, judgement, and emotional instability. Useful resources and activities will help youth to focus on positive qualities and practicing affirmations. Activities will include looking at media images, setting positive health-focused goals.
Dealing With Depression
An interactive teen depression workshop teaches adolescents and adults how to recognize depression in youth and teens and how to intervene. This workshop will offer practical insights into communication with others as a teen, communication with teenagers, parents and schools, and how to access treatment effectively. Expanding the knowledge base will help all involved be able to address the mental health needs of teens and to involve family, caregivers in helping teens get and stay well. Resources and strategies will be shared.
Teens Social Media
Is Social Media making teens depressed? This question is addressed during a panel discussion; writers and young activists share their stories in a public forum. This panel will provide remarkable insight and alarming trends linked to social media. Resources and concerns on recent studies on online platform and the connection to mental health issues will be shared along with solutions.
The Drug Effect
This workshop addresses the various ways that alcohol and drugs can impact an individual mentally, physically and academically and its effects on behavior and decision making. The session will look at facts and the myths about drugs and alcohol, strategies for prevention and share valuable resources.
Nourish to Flourish: Steps to Eating Healthy
Participants will learn the basics about eating healthy and how nutrition can impact health. In this hands-on workshop, students and parents will learn how to prepare simple, healthy meals from grocery-shopping through preparation.
Myths, stigma and stereotypes abound when it comes to mental health and mental illness. This workshop will explore where we learn these myths, facts about mental illness and ways we can all confront the stigma surrounding mental illness. This will be a panel discussion; resources are included in session.
It seems as if everyone is dealing with some form of stress. Students learn the most common sources of stress for middle, high school and college students and tools for effectively dealing with stress. Topics will include mediation, skills you need to effectively recognize stressors, and resources available at school, home and in the community.
Suicide Prevention: You Matter, Your Life, Your Voice
This workshop is geared towards students ages 13-19. Participants learn about mental health, suicide, how to recognize if you are in crisis, learning practical skills for initiating a conversation, process for self-help, and making a request/referral for help.
This workshop will be combined with You Matter, Your Life, Your Voice. This workshop will offer students a variety of approaches to address situations that may require intervention. Students will have the opportunity to discuss scenarios and learn skills that will motivate them to act when presented with situations. Students will also practice skills appropriately intervene during emergency and non emergency situations
Dealing with Loss and Grief
Interactive and engaging workshop to introduce a process to accept the reality of loss, to work through the pain of grief, ways to adjust to an environment, and emotionally moving on with life. This workshop is designed for all teens.
Movement Workshops: Zumba & Yoga
Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music. The hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo dance movements are incorporated.
Yoga meditative process including breathing, specific body posture will be practiced for good health and relaxation.
