ID Badges
ALL students must be wearing their ID and it should be visible at all times. Whether it be their school ID on a lanyard OR a temporary ID (sticker) badge, it MUST be worn.
If a student has lost their ID Badge, please replace it in the front office (it does cost money to replace an ID Badge).
If a student has forgotten their ID Badge, the consequence is last in line at lunch and no Snack Bar.
NEW
Students will be charged for an extensive number of temporary badges! Please be sure to use and wear your issued ID Badge.

Message for 6th Grade Principal
Happy February!
This month is busy and eventful.
We will be celebrating Black History Month through various activities and lessons through Advisory class. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” This month we will celebrate those individuals that paved the foundation for us to continue to build on.
Double Pup Dare Week (D.P.D.W.) will be the last week of February! We will be working to raise $3,000 for City Care. They are a nonprofit that help homeless individuals in Oklahoma. This is a great opportunity for 6th graders to get involved as there will be many activities during and after school.
More information to come regarding those, but the first thing on our agenda for raising money are Valentine Candy Grams. From Feb. 6 to Feb. 10, students can purchase a Valentine Candy gram at lunch to be sent to a friend on Valentines Day. These will cost $3 and include a full size candy bar.
I know this past week wasn’t ideal with the virtual days. I want to applaud the students who logged on each day and made an effort to continue their learning, even while at home. That shows real integrity and I appreciate that.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Science
Hello Thunderhawks!
We are now learning about Plate Tectonics. Students will explore seafloor spreading as well as evidence from earthquakes and volcanoes to support this theory. Students will be studying a lot of map data and learning how to interpret it. We will then move on to learning about Earth’s History and Geologic Time.

Hello Thunderhawks!
This month we will be focusing on our argumentative writing standards. We have begun working through how to recognize and create a claim, and we have also started using evidence and commentary to support our claims. We will be completing our “Views on Zoos” essay over the next few weeks. This assignment will be assigned and completed in chunks, and will be graded in multiple assignments that will lead up to the final essay. Please know that each student is going to be held responsible for staying on pace with the assignments, and they will not be able to move on until each segment is completed.

Literacy
This month students will finish up figurative language with symbolism, imagery, tone and mood. We look at how these are used for the author’s purpose in a variety of media, including print and video clips. As we come to the end of February, we will begin our Literature Circle unit. Students will hear book talks over the many novels to choose from and make their top 5 choices (and one they definitely do not want). Teachers then work to try and put each student in one of their top 3 choices. Students will then read that novel in a group of 3 - 4 students, discussing and answering questions as a group. This is always a favorite of students and teachers as each group is reading something different.

6th Grade Math
Hello Thunderhawks,
This month we will continue Unit 7 on Algebraic Expressions. Later this month we will move into Unit 8 on Equations and Inequalities. Weekly homework notes will continue this semester. Please check your student’s weekly canvas module if you have questions on when assignments or homework is due. Completion of homework notes is a vital part of our class learning. It also gives students a great resource if they need to complete any math work at home and notebooks can also be used on all unit tests. If you have questions about homework, please contact your student’s math teacher.
Need Help in Math? Here’s what you can do:
Come see your math teacher during pre-advisory (7:10-7:40)
Come do a working lunch. (There is always 1 math teacher available during that time to offer help).
6th Grade IA Pre-Algebra
This month we will be working on Unit 6- Equations and Inequalities. We will be learning how to write and solve one & two step equations and inequalities. We will also learn how to identify equations with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions.

Geography
Hey ThunderHawk families! Students have now survived a few remote days in middle school, and we’re hoping that is the last of our winter weather. This month students will focus on the areas of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Students will learn about the history of these areas, their unique climates, and their place in the modern world today. We are excited to explore!
