What is Bradycardia?

Bradycardia is an abnormally slow heart rate.

  • Hypertension or high blood pressure
  • Heart defects
  • Complications during a heart surgery
  • Inflammatory disease; Lupus
  • Certain medications

Risk Factors

Age is a high risk factor. Heart problems such as bradycardia often happen more in older adults. More risk factors include:

Treatment

There are numerous amounts of medication you can take for bradycardia. Another treatment is using a pacemaker. A pacemaker is a battery-operated device. It is about the size of a child's palm and it is implanted under your collarbone. Wires from the pacemaker are threaded into you veins. This is so the pacemaker can monitor your heart rate.

Diagnosis

When you go to see your doctor, he/she will ask you about your family history of heart diseases. They will review your current symptoms and your pulse.
