“Every driver who intends to back, stop, turn, or partly turn from a direct line ..., shall give the signals required in this article, plainly visible to the driver of such other vehicle, of his intention to make such movement.”
Overview
Before turn signals were installed into cars people used hand signals. In 1907 a guy named Percy Douglas-Hamilton applied for a patent for a device that is a turn signal that looks like a hand. Over time many people made variations of this turn signal device one of which is currently in the Smithsonian.
Relevance
A turn signal is relevant today because it stops many accidents from occurring.
