Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Spring Term 2 - Issue 1

A word from Mr Broom.

Welcome back to the second part of the Spring term. It's a busy one with Easter not too far away now. I'm looking forward to seeing the second part of our whole school 'Magic' topic which has been amazing.

In the next couple of weeks I'm hoping to announce a new teacher who will be joining us for the Summer Term in Year 3. Final negotiations are underway and I'll let you know as soon as possible so we can make introductions.

You may recall that our Year 5/6 classes created an exhibition/auction of their own artwork at the Eversley Park Centre before Christmas. I'm pleased to say that, with your donations, we managed to raise £130 for Friends of the Earth and £130 for Safe and Sounds Homes (a charity that works to prevent homelessness in 16-25 year olds in York, North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and Hull). Thank you for your donations. This was an excellent example of how learning became real for our children and it was great to see them so engaged.

Parent/Carer Consultation Evening Dates

It's really important that you take the opportunity to meet with your child's class teacher regarding their progress so far this year. All class teachers will be giving parents a copy of a report card which will provide targets, next steps and an insight into what your child is learning at school.

The following times are available and a letter has been sent home separately to this newsletter confirming the details.

Monday 12th March - 3pm - 6pm

Tuesday 13th March - 3pm - 6pm

Please make every effort to book an appointment.

I've got more information about the special lunches for parents / carers that are coming up this half term:

Tuesday 6 March - Y2 - World Book Week Lunch (more details have been sent by email)

Monday 12 March - Y1 - Mother's Day Lunch (more details later)

Wednesday 28 March - Reception - Easter Lunch (more details later)

Story Evening - 7th March - 5pm-6pm

We will be holding our first Story Evening on Wednesday 7th March from 5pm until 6pm. The evening will start with a whole school story in the hall, followed by class story telling. Parents and children are invited to return to school in PJs and bring their teddy bears. The purpose of the event is to foster a love for reading and it will be a great chance to see our teachers read with the children. The event will be supported by our wonderful Friends of Sherburn Hungate Association and will be free of charge too!

Dress up for Book Day / Book Week Information

It's World Book Day on Thursday 1st March and we're asking everyone to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We'll be having some fun book activities and all our children will be given a £1 World Book Day token that can be spent at participating bookstores. The tokens can be exchanged for a £1 World Book Day book or put towards any book or audio book worth £2.99 or more. The tokens are valid until 25 March 2018.

Our Reading Week will take place when the Scholastic Book Fair arrives in school on 7th/8th/9th/12th March.

Online E-Safety Parents' Course

You may recall in a previous newsletter that we had arranged for the NSPCC to run a parent awareness course on E-Safety. Here are the details:

Friday 2nd March at 2pm

O2 and the NSPCC have joined forces on a mission to help all children and their families in the UK stay safe online. Our hour-long workshop will help parents and carers understand their child’s online world, build their confidence and offer useful tools, support and guidance to have those important conversations that can help keep children safe online.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Reception children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 99.6%.

As you can see below, our attendance in most classes is above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.

A polite reminder that should children bring bikes/scooters to school, they must not be ridden on the school playground or footpaths for health and safety reasons.
