Below is information to help give parents some important information about South Elementary
Relationships: A Foundation to Success
Customized Learning
Customized Learning is a vision for learning in which students receive instruction targeted to their level of knowledge. In order to prove they are ready for the next topic, students will need to show that they have mastered the skills/standards. This means every child is getting the instruction they need based upon what they have mastered previously.
At South Elementary, 85% of our classrooms are Customized Learning Classrooms. Five out of seven classes in third grade and seven out of seven classes in fourth grade participate in this structure. In a CL classroom students follow a flow of completing a pretest to identify what they may already know and what they don't, small group instruction with the teacher who specifically targets his/her instruction to the topic the student needs to learn, work station practice with peers, independent practice, and a post test to assess understanding of new concepts. Students who may not master the content in this first cycle will receive additional instruction, practice and assessment to help master the content.
Third Grade Customized Learning
In our third grade customized learning classrooms, teachers follow the vision for targeting instruction at the students' level of knowledge in both language arts and math.
Math: During the 90 minutes of the daily math block, students continue to build on skills previously mastered. They follow the flow of pretest, small group instruction, work stations, independent practice and post test until the skill is mastered. At home parents will see students completing the independent practice assignments and have the ability to review previously taught lessons and preview upcoming lessons by accessing either the book or EnVision online. Teachers will send home a "red flag form" for students who continue to struggle mastering a concept. This form will include resources for parents to help their child at home. Teachers will cycle back throughout the year to continue to check for mastery.
Fourth Grade Customized Learning
In our fourth grade classrooms, teachers follow the vision for targeting instruction at the students' level of knowledge in math. *Even though Language Arts has not technically following the "Customized Learning" vision, teachers still identify individual reading levels and assign text within the child's reading range.
Player Stats Sheet
The stats include the following:
Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) Results-this score gives us an indication of a child's Lexile level (reading level). If a child 's Lexile is in the yellow or red range teachers assess further to identify skills needing addressed during small group instruction and during RTI. This test is given four times per year (Aug, Oct, Jan, May).
Scholastic Math Inventory (SMI) Results-this scores gives us an indication of a child's Quantile level (math readiness level). If a child's quantile level is in the yellow or red range, teachers assess further to identify skills needing addressed during small group instruction and during RTI. This test is given four times per year (Aug, Oct, Jan, May).
Acuity-Language Arts and Math-this score gives us a readiness level for the ISTEP test. Students are automatically assigned any standards in which they scored low on during this test. Students will be able to log on here at school and home to practice these standards. This test is given three times per year (Oct/Nov, Dec/Jan, Mar/Apr).
Math Fact Mastery-Students will continue to work on mastering their math facts throughout the year and will be assessed every other Friday. Students will document their progress on the Player Stats sheet 5 times throughout the year (Sept, Nov, Jan, Mar, May).
Reporting Student Progress
Teachers utilize a program called “Mastery Connect” to record student progress. This program is specially organized for standards-based reporting and keeps an electronic record of all pre– and post- assessments. It allows parents to see the standards their child excels at and which ones they are still working on in real-time. Parents will be receiving an email soon on how to access Mastery Connect.
