Cold and flu season is upon us. With that being said, I wanted to include some tips to help your child stay as healthy as possible through this season. The tips and resources below provided from the CDC will help you learn about actions you can take to protect yourself and others from flu and help stop the spread of germs.
- Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. - Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from school when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others. Sick students with vomiting and/or a temperature of 100.4 or higher will be sent home. They cannot return until they are fever free and are not vomiting or having diarrhea for 24 hours without the use of medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. - Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. - Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. - Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. - Practice other good health habits.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
As always if your child is ill please call and notify the front office of your child's absence.
Overcoming Failure
Mrs. O'Farrell
For this week’s Teacher Feature, we interviewed Ms. O’Farrell! Teaching English 9, Technical Communication, and Etymology, Ms. O’Farrell is in her fourth year of working here at Seeger!
While talking with Ms. O’Farrell, we talked about her past. I learned that if she could share a piece of advice with her younger self, she’d tell herself to step outside of her comfort zone, because “everything you want is there.” She also said, “You are never too old to chase a new dream.”
This talk of comfort zones and breaking them led well to our next question: What was the most spontaneous thing that she’s ever done? She claimed that while spontaneity is the norm in her family, the most spontaneous thing she’d ever done was a 4-day-long surprise birthday trip to New York City. The adventure was arranged by her daughter and revealed to her less than 6 hours before they had to leave for the airport.
Speaking of adventures brought us to the topic of bucket lists. Ms. O’Farrell had this to say on the matter:
“I have an actual paper, handwritten list that I made in 2010. I have all kinds of things on it. I have big-ticket items like going to Ireland, earning a college degree, and learning to play the guitar. I also have smaller things that I’ve wanted to do, just never had, like trying sushi, camping at a star park, or seeing a show on Broadway (Still need to camp and play guitar, but I’ve done the others). I love being able to check things off my list, write when I did them and who I was with, and decide what is next to do. I think everyone should have a tangible bucket list.”
After learning all about Ms. O’Farrell, I had one last question. If she ever wrote an autobiography containing all this information, what would the title be? She claimed that it would be titled “Organized Chaos: Welcome to the Circus.” I don’t know about you, but I’d be the first in line to buy that title.
Even though her autobiography isn’t on store shelves yet, you can still find out more about Ms. O’Farrell below!
Quinley Dietrich
Quinley Dietrich is this week's Seeger Junior High Student of the Week chosen by Mr. Orahood.
Quinley talks about her favorite part of Mr. Orahood’s class.
“My favorite part of Mr. Orahood’s class is his dad jokes on Friday”
Quinley also talks about how it feels to be chosen for Student of the Week.
“I feel good and happy that I got to be Student of the Week.”
Mr.Orahood tells what Quinley does well in his class.
“Quinley does a really nice job with her attention to detail and engagement in class. She always comes prepared, actively works through the notes, labs and assignments and asks questions when they are needed. She is one whenever something is asked of her, or a task is placed in front of her, she does everything in her power to ensure it gets completed the right way.”
Mr. Orahood talks about what he looks for when nominating students for Student of the Week.
“One of the biggest things I look at for Student of the Week is the level of accountability, mannerisms, and overall attitude. Is that student going to take the time and ensure that they are putting themselves in the best possible position to succeed and learn?”
Congratulations to Quinley and good luck to anyone wanting to be Student of the Week.

Football
That Patriots finished the season at 8-4 (two losses to CC, one to North Vermillion who was a sectional championship competitor, and to WRC champ South Vermillion). The record of the teams we lost to this year was a combined 25-9 this season.
Congratulations on a great season. A special thanks to the Seniors and Coaches!
Swimming
Each week we vote swimmer of the week. This award goes to the swimmer voted on among their peers. Who had the best attitude, worked hard and spread kindness or helped others.
The first week goes to Ava Kihlstrand. She's been working in conditioning already for 6 weeks and has been the biggest cheerleader to others. Though I may get an "ugg" each practice... at the end she says "I feel good!" Ava works hard and has a great attitude! It is a pleasure coaching her.
Second swimmer of the week was Grace Hennessey . New to Varsity swimming this year, she has a beautiful freestyle and attitude. Although not getting a tiara until Saturday, I granted her permission to steal it anytime she wants this week!
Our current swimmer of the week is Emily Greene. Again, Emily is new to Varsity swim and already a great asset to the team. She works hard and always has a smile on her face.
This week the boys begin. Our first meet is November 16th where Seeger will host Rensselaer and Harrison. Hope to see you there!
