RI Commissioner Wagner and Deputy Commissioner Sinder Visit SHS!
Dr. Ken Wagner, Commissioner of the Rhode Island Department of Education, and Deputy Commissioner Mary Ann Snider toured Scituate High School on Thursday to learn from students and teachers about how the school is preparing the next generation of leaders. Wagner took an inside look into what an “app building” class consists of, what students learn in engineering, and how Scituate's blended learning techniques are helping students become more versatile. Wagner said that SHS and its Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are “an amazing story and a nice confluence of various things that ultimately is producing stuff that’s good for kids." Dan Costello, grade 12 student, told the commissioner how SHS balances CTE pathways with liberal arts subjects: “In addition to the CTE programs, we haven't forgotten about the other classes.” Tenth grade student Talia St. Angelo talked with Wagner about the atmosphere at SHS: “We’re a home. I could go talk to any teacher if I had a problem and know they would help me and support me.” Wagner said SHS’ is the right size "to get a range of opportunities, but still small enough that you can still feel like you’re part of a unified culture, a unified environment."

From History
Mrs. Buonaccorsi took five juniors: Austin Bert, Haley Kaye, Josie Miner, Stephen Venditelli and Conal Wilkie and two seniors: Justin Andreozzi and Dan Costello, to compete in the National History Bowl at Brown University on Saturday, February, 23rd. These seven students gave up an entire Saturday to complete in the team competitions. We only found out about this competition two weeks ago and we competed against teams that have been practicing twice a week all year. The students did awesome, however, neither team scored high enough in the tournament to allow them to go to Washington DC for the National tournament. However, Justin Andreozzi did achieve a spot in the individual competition of the US History Bee and he will be competing in the national competition in Washington DC in April. Congratulations!
Pictures attached: The first and last picture is a picture of the two teams that competed. The second picture is the two teams practicing together during their lunch break with Dan Costello reading them questions.
