Authentic Learning- Live Knee Replacement at MRHS!
The full knee replacement surgery on March 21, 2016 was a success!! The surgery was live streamed to our classroom at MRHS and Ms. Flint’s Anatomy & Physiology students were able to take part in a videoconference with the surgical team. Leading up to the knee surgery, students completed a series of activities where they worked online to conduct a virtual knee surgery, labeled x-rays and used them to diagnose potential issues, built a model hinge joint from blocks and rubber bands and finally investigated treatment options by using a case study to justify any decisions they made for their patient. On the day of the surgery, our MRHS students asked the surgeon OUTSTANDING questions and really got into the day’s activities by dressing up in scrubs! What a great way to end our unit on the skeletal system!

Shark "Shout Outs" (SSO's) - MRHS's way of Appreciating the Great People here!
Shark Shout Outs are spreading fast & furious at MRHS. We start every staff meeting with Shout Outs to colleagues and Shout Out to students nominated for student of the month during am announcements. Now, students and Parents are welcome to send in a Shark Shout Out as a token of appreciating other students and staff in the school. Email Mr. Burkhead at bburkhead@monomoy.edu, or drop them off to Ms. Hooper in the main office! The enthusiasm is contagious!
The Young Women's Club of MRHS would like to send a very loud Shark Shout Out to Mr. Michael MacAskill, father of Sarah and Lily. Mr. MacAskill has made a very generous contribution to our club in order to ensure that three of our young women can join us on our educational trip to New York City on May 20 and 21. He repeatedly said that as the father of three daughters, it was very important to him to support the young women of our community and give them opportunities to expand their horizons. MONOMOY HERO: Mr. Michael MacAskill
Ms. Forte-Doyle & Ms. Gleason
Big Shark Shout Out to Mrs. Chizek and Mrs. Whitcomb for visiting my enrichment class to explain the benefits of reducing stress in students' and teachers' lives. We learned how to be grateful and find ways to relax and DE-stress. We competed a mountain meditation and left feeling more "relaxed and at peace."
Mr. Smeltzer
Shark Shout Out to Ms. Cote for volunteering to participate in a NEASC visit. This is great professional development!
From NEASC: The Committee on Public Secondary Schools wishes to invite you to volunteer to serve on the visiting committee noted above. The school is seeking continued accreditation in the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. You were selected as a volunteer to serve on this visiting committee based on the quality of your work on previous committees, your expressed interest in serving, and/or on a recommendation from your principal. We appreciate you serving on this very important committee.
I would like to acknowledge and thank all the student volunteers at MRMS's Cyber Safety presentation and Community Resource & Wellness Fair.
The following high school students provided child care and assisted with greeting and directing parents: Emma Mawn; Lizzy Pandisco; Livia Graham; Tori McCormack; Emma Bowden; Julia Messinger; Grace Boyle; and Katie Dever.
From the middle school: Aliza Pillsbury represented the Human Rights Academy and sold snacks; Olivia Hayden assisted in the Wellness Fair.
I am proud to have such fine students representing our schools.
Best,
Kristen Hayden
A "shark shout out" to all the MRHS teachers who presented our Program of Studies at this week's School Committee meeting - great job!
Dr. Blanchard
Big Shark Shout Out to senior Drew Senatore for helping the Best Buddies with Mononoy Friday's music in the cafeteria. He borrowed a computer from the library and programmed it so that we have a procedure going forward for every Friday.
Mr. Smeltzer
Mega Kudos for Ms. Sarah Wheaton for all her efforts supporting our students who are working on thesis papers and other various long term projects.
Ms. Wheaton has been extremely helpful every step of the way. Thanks Ms. Wheaton:)
Mr. Alexander
Credit for Life Fair for MRHS Seniors- What an opportunity!
On Thursday, April 14th, all seniors will be participating in the Credit for Life Fair during the first two blocks of the day in the gymnasium.
Credit for Life is a financial literacy program sponsored by the Cape Cod 5, and has been a great success at many local high schools. At the fair, students choose their occupation and spend the next few hours making the various financial decisions they will make as an adult, ranging from choosing where to live to buying a TV. Nearly 50 volunteers will be on hand from real businesses in our community including banks, automotive dealers, clothing retailers, higher education, insurance and more. Students are encouraged to dress for success! (Don’t you wish someone did this for you when you were 18?)
This week, seniors will be choosing their occupations during lunch at a table outside the cafeteria. More information will be coming as we get closer, and seniors will attend an orientation during enrichment on April 13th.
