Live Lessons and Recording Lessons/Directions
Recording Lessons
This past week April shared how to record lessons in Canvas using studio. I hope this week you had the opportunity to play around and give it a try. Beginning Monday everyone needs to start recording your videos and posting them. We've heard from multiple parents that the videos help TREMENDOUSLY as they are going back and trying to help their students complete assignments or even find assignments.
Things to remember when recording videos:
- Talk slowly - don't be the MicroMachine Man, video above. 85% of our students fall under one category or another (ELL, SPED, 504, Dyslexic, etc.). Talking slow is good for everyone.
- Remember to give a direction, stop let the kids do, and then give the direction again. We all need to hear things a couple of times.
- If you are recording a video asynchronously you can tell students to 'pause the video here and do ______, once you're done start the video again'. Giving them step by step directions is key for students and parents.
Live Lessons
These have been so fun to pop in on this week! I've almost made my way to every class!
- Don't hesitate to send out a Remind Message to parents letting them know you are ONLINE right now!
- 3-5 if you are comfortable sending your students the information on how to sign up for Remind on their phones you can do that too...they can't talk with each other, only with you, and they don't have your phone number. Great way to get them to start managing themselves. This may also help for those kids who are home by themselves...
- If you haven't set up some kind of texting system with parents now is the time!!
- So far I have invites from: 5th Bilingual, Lira, Law Homeroom, Parker, Baltao, Kosteski, and Brooker.
- Jocelyn has Deleon's
- If you have not added Jocelyn and I to your messaging system please do asap. If you are using Class Dojo you'll need to make me a student and we can accept as a parent.
- Below is an example of what was posted in my daughter's orchestra class. The click here link took me to a page with step-by-step directions for parents.
Things to put on your 'to-do' list....
Substitute Plans
We need each classroom teacher to develop at least 3 days of virtual and face to face sub plans in the event that you are out. This is on the BOY checklist but things you might not have thought about are:
- Create a 'sub module' in your Canvas classroom and a binder in your physical classroom. They need to match. Don't publish the module in the Canvas classroom but label it 'sub plans'. This will help us find it to have it ready to publish.
- Create a binder in your classroom that is clearly labeled 'sub plans' and let your teammate know where they are if we need to find them.
- Virtual lessons need to have videos and prerecorded lessons so students are able to see you teach the lesson. Face to face kids will have the sub present but they may or may not be possible for our virtual students.
- These are due by September 7, 2020. We will begin making sure we can find them in Canvas on September 8th.
Seating charts:
- You must create seating charts for the cafeteria and classroom. It is okay to change them but if you change them you must keep the old copy, write a date on it and store it for at least a week. Should a child test positive we need to know who all they were around and close to prior to testing positive so we, admin will do this, can let those families know (contact tracing).
- Cafeteria seats will be marked and numbered with places where students must sit. At each 9 week switch over we may have to move them due to more students joining us but there will always be a seat #1, #2, #3, etc.
- These are due and need to be posted in your classroom by September 7, 2020 using your current list of students who are attending F2F.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need clarification...if you do, someone else probably does too. :)
Lesson Plans
It's time to start using our IPCs again! However, it will be a SLOOOWWW start.
August 24th Week
- Everyone will need to plan out only the front page with your grade level, first tab of the plan, see example above for 5th grade math. If you don't fill out the actual lesson plan that's okay, baby steps. I created a link below that will take you directly to lesson plans in the PC drive.
August 31st Week
- You will need to start on the plans themselves focusing on your I Do, We Do, You Dos, planning specific asynchronous activities/lessons for students, and ensuring you are ready to go for Itime groups (see below for information about Tier 2&3 students from Esther).
- iTime information does not need to go on the lesson plans right now but it's always good practice
- Below is a template that Jana found and edited for Mrs. Law and Mrs. McCreary. You are welcome to use it or something like it. This will continue to help students plan out their day and help parents know what students should be working on each day. On your own activities could also include any assignments you've given them in core content to finish on their own. These need to be posted either for the week or daily for students...just as you would in your classrooms on the board. You'll find this example in the lesson plan folder as well.
September 7th Week
- Combine it all together as we start Face to Face Instruction!
MAP
Thank you for attending training with the RADD Department this week. There was a lot of information in that training. Here's what you need to know right now:
- Along with the parent pre-test letters a survey will go out to parents this weekend (Parent Smore, Skyward) asking where they want their student to test (remote or on campus). After the parent Smore goes out on Monday, feel free to include the survey in your weekly communication with parents as well.
- Once we hear from parents, we will begin to schedule testing groups.
- Your job is to begin talking to students about taking the test, go through the practice with your class.
- More information, including scheduling, will be shared next week after the surveys are received.
If you have any questions about MAP, ask Jocelyn. She's here to help.
Updates from Our Interventionist - Esther Maqsood
- Esther will be bringing around lists for you of students who are identified as being Tier 3 (falling below the 21% on middle of year MAP).
- She will also share with you a list of students that were pulled by the intervention teachers last year but were labeled at Tier 2.
- Esther and Daniela will start meeting with Tier 3 students on August 31st during intervention. She and Daniela have created their own Canvas courses and will invite students there to connect to Google Meet.
- Tier 2 students on the list should be looked at closely...these students could slip by only a few percentage points and be below the 21st percentile. If you are not pulling them already for intervention you need to.
- Once MAP testing is completely done we will reshuffle kids and plan for new groups.
Updates from our ELST - Selena Lawrence
- Ingrid Fleury is our Bilingual Specialist this year. Her email is ICFleury@garlandisd.net.
- The Ellevation login this year is through Ready Hub. Please check to make sure you can login. If you have any problems, you can email Diana Pecorino at DPecorino@garlandisd.net or Tiffany Gruber at TGruber@garlandisd.net.
- There are free ESL classes for our families, and registration will begin in September through the Evening Study Center page on the GISD website: https://www.garlandisd.net/content/evening-study-center
- Let me know if you have any students missing in their HMH roster; HMH rollout in curriculum by grade: 3rd began this week, 2nd 8/24, 1st 8/31, Kinder 9/14
- Canvas resources--(one you already have linked in our Canvas file, here is the other): https://docs.google.com/document/d/12TLk1HQmQMdn-k0fMoQJn_P41BQYJiW0pb01d6_26QA/edit?usp=sharing
- Book read-aloud guidelines (also listed in WAIP list) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vUNwbrZhDY-5HzEe8tdVrAsfaXzyLANn/view?usp=sharing
- For read-alouds, Rigby books should be fine to read-aloud as long as the video is recorded in Canvas since it is a closed system.
