Apps, Webpages, Strategies and More!
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 2-6
MEDIA CENTER UPDATE
The books are feeling neglected!
With all of the attention being given to those shiny new iPads, the books are feeling left out. You can sign up anytime to bring your classes down to check out some books. Literacy is a focus of our building this year, so whether it's for your subject or just for fun, let's encourage them to READ!

Overdue Fines List
Mrs. Myers put out the first fines list of the year. Please refer to the list and remind those students to return their overdue books.
HMFC Library is now on Twitter!
If you are a social media savvy teacher that knows a thing or two about twitter, then follow us @HMFC_Library. Let me know what cool and engaging lessons you have going on in your class so that we can tweet it out and show off our exceptional teachers and students at HMFC!

A template has been added to your personal teacher page located on the Hickman Mills Freshman Center webpage. Once you log into the webpage as a site manager, all you have to do is replace the information in the template with your information.

PD THIS WEDNESDAY 11/4/15
Technology is the focus of this week's PD. We will have a "menu" of sessions for you to choose from. Each session will be teacher-led and you will be asked to complete a survey of how you will use it in your class between now and next Wednesday. Make sure you bring your devices with you to the meeting.
APPS OF THE WEEK
Each week I would like to spotlight some apps and webpages that are being used in the world of ed-tech. Give them a try and let me know what you think. We can work together on how to incorporate them into your lessons. However, DON'T try to use them all! Get comfortable with one before you try another. We know where trying to do TOO much at once can lead us.
Classkick
Awesome tool that allows you to create assignments for the iPad. You can see students working in real time, they can ask you for help, students can help each other, and you can provide immediate feedback all within the app.
Edpuzzle
Webpage that allows you to upload any video from a multitude of sources; Youtube, Khan Academy, TedEd, even your own videos. You can embed questions and audio into the video.
Kwizzu
Not an app, but an extension for Google. Easy way to download Youtube videos to your computer so that you can use them with your students. No more district filtering!

EXPAND YOUR PLN
What the heck is a "PLN"? A "personal learning network" is a way for you to make connections, share ideas and resources, collaborate, and learn from others. Your network can now go beyond just your colleagues at school, it can go global. And the best part is that you have access to it 24/7.
Here are some places you can start to build your PLN:
- Google+: If you haven't joined Google+, you are missing out. It's a great place to go to find answers to questions, join communities that are focused on your personal interests, and more. I use it almost daily.
- Twitter: Believe it or not, twitter is more than just a place to post random thoughts. There are plenty of positive uses for twitter in building your PLN, many are listed above. But also check out how it can be a powerful tool to use in your classroom with students.
- Pinterest: Pinterest is the greatest thing ever invented. Sorry sliced bread. I have gone from ridiculing my teenaged daughter about why she wastes her time trying different projects or new recipes, to spending hours pouring over pins related to iPads in the classroom. Yes, literally hours. We won't talk about the boards that I have devoted to funny cat pictures and GIF's. Bottom line, you can learn a lot about educational topics on Pinterest. Check it out!
