Miss. McDonald's Classroom
Instructional Design Elements
Next year when I have my first classroom, the following are elements I am hoping to include in order to help my students be successful readers who enjoy literature.
Magazine Rack
According to research, students who read magazines have better test scores. Using a magazine rack like this one in my classroom will save space and also provide engaging reading materials for my students that might not be interested in novels or picture books.
Reading Loft
This was my favorite instructional design idea! I love the idea of having a cozy place for students to read and work and this is so unique! Although it may be hard to build, once you have it students will be able to use the loft as a reward or to work together in small groups. I think students of all ages would benefit from this learning environment.
Lamps
I think providing natural, softer lighting is a good idea in a classroom because students will feel more comfortable than they would under harsh ceiling lighting. I also believe that this lighting mimics the light they have in their home - therefore encouraging them to read outside of the classroom as well.
Visualizing Poster
Reading strategies posters are great to display in the classroom. Not only are they appealing for visual learners but they also exist as reminds for students who might struggle with reading. Teachers can reference a poster to remind students what to look for in the text. Students can also look to the posters for help BEFORE they ask the teacher.
Mailboxes
Instead of writing notes to classmates like the website suggested, I think a better use for the mailbox would be to have students write to their favorite authors or book characters when they have extra time. When applicable, I could mail the letters and see if the class got a response back.
Reading Buddies
Allowing students to bring in a stuffed animal or toy to read with (not to be distracted by!) can be a great incentive for students to feel more comfortable reading out-loud. Extra toys can be provided for students that may not be able to bring one in. This would be a great independent reading activity.
