HOLY ROSARY NEWSLETTER
Term 4 Week 8 - 30 November
This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent, which is also the first Sunday of the new liturgical year. The Advent season includes the four Sundays that precede Christmas. Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. In this season, we recall two central elements of our faith: the final coming of the Lord in glory and the incarnation of the Lord in the birth of Jesus. The key themes of the Advent season are watchful waiting, preparation, and justice.
Thank you to Matthew Wong, Thomas Weeks, Madeleine Nankivell and Matthew Gardner who prepared our Advent focus in the undercover area. This is a wonderful time of year as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and we thank you for your part in making it very special.
FROM MARK:
Dear Parents and Guardians
Welcome to a monster newsletter! It is probably the biggest one of the year.
All reports from the Annual Community Meeting last week are included in this newsletter. If you weren’t able to attend I’d like to suggest that you take a look and get a comprehensive picture of what has been taking place this year. The reports make for worthwhile reading.
Congratulations to everyone involved in our Swimming Carnival on Monday. There was a great vibe evident, and a lot of parents and extended family were there to cheer the children on – it was such fun! Rob Flexman our P.E. teacher did an exceptional job of organising and running the carnival. Thank you Rob. Thanks also to the big number of parents who were involved in the running of the carnival alongside our teachers and support staff – your support is invaluable.
Wednesday’s transition morning was an opportunity for our children – including several of the children new to the school for 2019 – to spend time with their teachers, in their new classes to get a sense of place. We believe that, together with early notification of classes and teachers, this is an important opportunity to maximise chances of a smooth start next term, as well as step away from any concerns over the break about ‘what might be’. The break is there to be enjoyed! Family, fun, sun, sand, surf – all take priority!
We had not one, but two concerts today! Our Three Year Old Kindy gang strutted their stuff in front of a most appreciative audience. They were great! Likewise the Siena gang were in awesome form at their concert. All the children are to be congratulated, as well as their teachers and support staff who have invested so much into creating these memorable experiences. Thank you indeed.
The end of the year is almost here and there is still plenty of fantastic stuff on between now and then - Year Six Graduation on Monday, Big Day In concert on Tuesday, Big Day Out excursions on Wednesday, and our end of Year Mass on Friday, are well in train and we welcome your company.
Best Wishes
Mark de Kluyver

Staffing 2019
Our staff list forms part of our newsletter, and adds to the ACM report (attached), and people’s knowledge of class lists.
Brother Stephen, here two days per week this year, will complete his move to Notre Dame School. Stephen has been a member of our leadership team for ten years and has brought to the school a unique set of skills, wise counsel and a thoughtful approach. Stephen we thank you for your commitment over this time to the pastoral for the future.
Jen Beale who has been on maternity leave for some years, has resigned, but her boys attend our school so we will still see plenty of her! We thank Jen very much for her commitment to Holy Rosary.
From our Siena team, Michelle Broomfield, on long service leave from her position in the Siena team, will not be returning. Michelle has decided on a completely different career path, and is now working as a prestart consultant with a large building company. Michelle we thank you very much for the great work you have done in our school.
Lauren Boland who took over Liz Laverock’s position in Year Five for a semester while Liz moved to lead the Siena Centre, leaves us. Lauren took over teaching our Year Five gang at very short notice and has done very well indeed! Thanks very much Lauren. We have really enjoyed working with you.
To every one of you, we say that we will miss you. On behalf of our community I would like to express our appreciation for the significant contribution that you have made to the children in your care. Some of you have been here for a short time, others for much longer, but your focus has never wavered - the children are at the centre of the picture and every contribution to their faith, well-being and development that you have made will always remain with them.
Sylvia Ryan, who supports some of our junior primary teachers, leaves us - but just for twelve months. Sylvia is taking accrued leave, and Sylvia we hope that you enjoy every minute of it!
Jen Rudyard will continue at St Joseph’s Kununurra for another year, and will be Acting Assistant Principal for the first term. Jen is a most talented teacher and it is clear that she is both motivated and happy in the Kimberley. We wish her well!
And to our staffing arrangements for 2019.
Aleana Brennan, currently Assistant Principal at Holy Spirit City Beach, joins us next year as Assistant Principal working with Geordie. She is excited to be joining the Holy Rosary community. We look forward to welcoming her. Aleana and Geordie will be working alongside teachers in class in the roles of support and enrichment. Their enthusiasm, dedication and expertise will be of significant benefit to our children and their teachers.
Sandra Frodsham moves from Year Five classroom teacher to Year Two classroom support teacher next year, with responsibility for the Levelled Literacy Intervention Programme. which was introduced this year and has been very successful. Sandra has had plenty of experience in Year Two and is looking forward to this new opportunity.
Kathy Tanham who has been in both support and Year Two this year, goes full time in Year Two. Kathy’s deep and applied knowledge of child development will be a great asset across our junior primary team. It was lovely to witness the enthusiastic response Kathy received from the children at Transition on Wednesday!
Holly Butson’s role broadens next year and encompasses much of the work currently related to Brother Stephen. Many of you will be aware that prior to life at Holy Rosary, Holly had an extensive background in Social Work and Youth Work. To that end Holly has enthusiastically agreed to increasing her hours and adding the role of Pastoral Worker - Student Well-Being to her profile in our school. Holly will be involved in student leadership, and running programmes for our students under this umbrella. Holly we are excited about the opportunities for next year!
REPORTS FROM ACM TUESDAY 20 NOVEMBER
LETTER FROM BROTHER STEPHEN
Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
I presume by the time you read this you will have heard that I am finishing at Holy Rosary School this year. Before I leave, I wanted to take the opportunity to write a few departing words. It is not without a feeling of sadness that I finish my association with Holy Rosary after a period of over ten years. On the other hand, I have a sense of excitement of being able to extend my days of employment at Notre Dame Catholic Primary School, Cloverdale. It has been made easier by the fact that I have already spent some time there, but I am sure there will still be some adjustments to be made.
These past ten years in many ways seems only to be a short time. I can still remember quite vividly my first day here and being introduced to both staff and students. I’ve had a wonderful time and I will always treasure the experience. I have seen a couple of generations of children come through the school and only this week, while listening to the year 5’s presenting their Student Leadership speeches, I was thinking how much they have grown and matured since being in their early years of kindy and pre-primary. Now they are heading into their last year of primary school and it has been wonderful to watch them grow and mature. To hear them talk about how proud they are to be part of a fabulous school and grateful for their experiences was pleasing to hear. I am sure this is a similar experience for all the children here. I have also felt honoured to have listened to your stories and participated in your life experiences and those of your children.
I feel it has been a privilege to have worked here at Holy Rosary and have got to know so many of the families through being involved in a number of events occurring at the school. A particular fond memory was being involved in the building of the kindy nature playground a few years ago. Here is where I met and got to know a number of dads. The dads’ and kids camp outs were always a lot of fun as were some of the Holy Rosary Community fund raising events, such as the Bogan Bingo and the Musical Bingo. I have sincerely been touched by everyone’s kindness, friendliness and generosity of spirit. There is a wonderful strong, caring community here and I know it will continue well into the future.
So thank you to the all the students, parents and staff, both past and present, you have all made my time here such a memorable one. I will not forget my days and years that I have spent at Holy Rosary, I will always remember it as being a special time in my life.
May you have a blessed and enjoyable Christmas.

Our swimmers made a big splash at today’s Holy Rosary Swimming Carnival! Well done Gold faction on your win and congratulations to those who led in their year groups. Thank you, Rob Flexman, for yet another terrific sporting event this term.

2x Basketballs of appropriate size
2x Footy of different sizes

SCIENCE
In Science this past fortnight, we have been learning about different types of light. We made posters and dioramas to show what we learnt. One type was Ultra Violet Light, which makes everything that is white go a blue colour and as you can see from the pic, Tonic water has a chemical in it that glows when the U.V light hits it in the dark. It can also damage white blood cells so be careful! We also learnt about Fibre Optics which are lights that can change colour! At this time of year you might see them in Christmas Trees.

2018 Holy Rosary Swimming Carnival
On November 26 Year 3 to 6 students participated in the Holy Rosary Swimming Carnival at HBF Stadium.
This year there was a fun vibe all day thanks to the music maestro Mr Edwards. The students and parents cheered and danced the day away in the stands and on the pool deck. The swimmers tried their hardest in each event and we had some fantastic performances on the day. In the end Gold survived a late charge from Blue to win the carnival again but the tide may be changing so look out for a close affair next year.
I would like to thank all of the parent helpers and staff, in particular the hard working Marshalls for all your help on the day. It is only your continued support that allows days like these to happen and the smiles on the children’s faces all day were a sign your efforts are very much appreciated.
Thank you to everyone that has contributed to the sports program this year. It has been a busy but rewarding year and we can all look forward to more excitement in 2019.

Library News
This week we celebrated the contribution to our school by our amazing 2018 Library Monitors. Thank you to (L-R) Callum, Nate, Lawson, Joseph, Jonathan, Nia, Bianca, Sienna, Amy, Abbey, Evie and Tilly for everything you have done to make our Library the relaxing and beautiful space that it is. The Monitors work very hard, from running the class trolleys and putting books away daily, to assisting with the Second Hand Book Sale for Project Compassion in Term 1, the Scholastic Book Fair in Term 2 and the Book Week Parade in Term 3. This group have been reliable, organised and friendly all year and we are truly grateful for their efforts. I will miss you all. Good luck in high school – you will all be fabulous!

FAQ #2
This is our first full year of running our collaborative classrooms right across school. The way in which the stationery is used was shared at all parent - teacher meetings at the beginning of the year. The bulk of the resources are pooled so the focus is on learning, and not moving around the classroom sourcing one’s own pens, pencils, rubbers etc. This has been really successful in terms of ensuring that teaching and learning time is spent as well as it can possibly be spent. Teachers have refined stationery lists for 2019 and the cost of the 2019 stationery lists has on average gone down by $30 per class, evidence that teachers review the lists mindfully and change them depending on consumption. The most expensive list ($125) works out at 60 cents per school day. The least expensive ($54) works out at 27 cents per school day.
Some people have queried what happens to leftover stationery at the end of the year and whether they can have it back. While most resources are shared, some are named and will go home on the last Monday of school, together with any unused stationery which will be shared among the children. This gives parents and guardians who wish to, time to review their 2019 stationery orders before they are due to be placed on Friday.
However, any materials which will be used during that last week won’t go home until the last day. This is because our teaching and learning programmes continue right through until Friday afternoon’s end of the term class parties.
2. JUNIOR PRIMARY BOOKLISTS ARE BEING DELIVERED AT SCHOOL BUT MIDDLE AND UPPER PRIMARY BOOKLISTS ARE BEING DELIVERED AT HOME. LAST YEAR ALL LISTS WERE DELIVERED TO SCHOOL. WHY IS THAT?
A number of parents in middle and upper primary were keen for the orders to go home first. The teachers of those older children said it would work for them as the older children would be able to quickly sort out the equipment on their first day back at school. So we are trialling this change for 2019. Will one change suit everybody? No. Will we ever have the perfect system? Same answer!
