How can we help?
When a child is interested in learning more about any topic, he or she will go through a stage I like to call the... "I wonder" stage. That is an important phase of the learning process and that is exactly what is often so difficult to cultivate when we, as parents, are simply crunched for time.
These kids surely thought... "I wonder..."
Let's guess...
What did this little one wonder about?
Has the kid learned anything?
Let's guess some more...
How about this one?
Learning though experimenting is crucial.
Think about this:
- Is there a limited timeframe within which we say it is ok for a child to be messy?
- Is it possible to experiment without being messy or making mistakes?
- Do we encourage our kids to keep experimenting?
Isn't that how we learn?
One more time...
Still wondering...
Making connections is one of the most important steps to successful learning. It helps children and adults create patterns that give them a sense of stability of the mind.
I encourage kids to say "I wonder".
Challenge for 5th grade:
Say / make possible to say "I wonder" about something every day.
Make / help make at least one connection between the "I wonder" and real life.
"I wonder if this activity will lead to more connections to Mathematics..." A. Che
