Updates from Manassas Park Middle School - 5/31/2019
Week 39 - Here Comes JUNE!
Wow! May is complete and June starts next week! This week saw our 6th Grade have an assembly with the author Coren Allen, who surprised us by giving a copy of his new book "What if it Just Started Raining?" to every single 6th grade student! This book should have come home on Tuesday - check it out!
On Thursday, we had out final pep parade of the school year, featuring our MPMS drum line, our Spring athletes, and our students who earned a perfect 600 on the SOL!
Next week is the completion of our SOL testing, with 8th grade students taking their Science/Civics SOLs on Tuesday, and Wednesday/Thursday/Friday representing expedited retake opportunities for all SOL tests. We will be finished with SOL testing on Friday, June 6th.
Lastly, the final week of school is our field days, grade level honor ceremonies, and our 8th grade picnic at Signal Hill Park. It will be a week of fun and celebration of the conclusion of a GREAT school year!
SOL Testing is Coming up! 8th Grade and Retakes in Early June!
Please put the following SOL Testing dates into your calendar:
- Civics/Science 8: June 4
- Math Reading Expedited Retakes: June 5-7
- Civics/Science 8 Expedited Retakes: June 7
PE Locker Clean out!
In the next two weeks, starting June 6th, students will begin cleaning out their PE lockers. Remember to bring a plastic bag or leave space for your uniform. Any clothes/shoes left in your locker will be donated at the end of the year.
Important Reminder as we approach the end of the school year:

We are requesting that all payments be made by June 3, 2019.

For Next Year's 6th Graders!
Also, the attachment below is from the health department discussing required vaccinations for Middle School. The TDaP shot is required to be given to all students prior to the start of 7th grade. (This was previously required for 6th graders... this upcoming class is the first with a 7th grade requirement.)
Please make sure that you talk with you doctor about vaccinations and if your child has a physical completed over the summer that they fill out a VHSL sports physical form to be turned in for after school athletics next year!
Elective Schedule Realignment for 2019-20 School Year
In our ongoing efforts to enhance the teaching and learning opportunities at MPMS, we are excited to share a realignment in our elective schedule for the 2019-20 school year. Now, all elective classes will be 90 minutes on A and B days.
Students will only be taking 5 classes per quarter (instead of the current maximum of 7) and students will change their elective classes each quarter or semester. In addition, this allows our electives teachers more teaching time (as it removes a transition each school day) without compromising the plethora of elective offerings currently available to our students at MPMS.
In order to keep the same number of instructional minutes, different classes will be offered for different lengths of time:
Full Year Electives: Band, Choir, ESOL, Spanish I
Semester (1/2) Year Electives: PE
Quarterly Electives: All Art, Business, STEM, Family & Consumer Science, Guitar, Journalism, and Spanish 6 & 7 classes
See the two example schedules below for a possible 7th grade elective student schedule to gain an idea of how the year would work.
Students who have met with their school counselor have a worksheet that breaks down electives, and if you or your child have any questions please reach out to their school counselor or elective teachers (specifically band and choir.)
