Operation Gratitude - Donate Any Extra Halloween Candy
Elm Street is once again partnering with Operation Gratitude to collect extra Halloween candy for our troops overseas. Those interested may bring extra Halloween candy to Elm Street November 1 - November 6. Information will go home to families in Eagle Folders the Monday before Halloween. Special thanks to Ms. Ewing for coordinating this effort for our school. If you're interested in helping to gather, bag, or load donations on the afternoon of November 6, please let Ms. Ewing know. Thank you! In the meantime, here is a link for more information about the project.
Elm Street HOMECOMING FLOAT
How important is a flu shot?
How important is a flu shot?
In short, VERY!
Andi Shane, MD, MPH, System Medical Director, Infectious Diseases at Children’s Healthcare says, “Flu season is unpredictable. The best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu is for everyone 6 months and older to get a seasonal flu vaccine as soon as possible.”
5 Reasons why all children (6mos+) should get a yearly flu vaccine:
1. It reduces your child’s chance of getting the flu. (CDC estimates that the flu vaccine prevented 5.3 million flu illnesses during 2016-2017 flu season)
2. It reduces the length and severity of a flu infection if you do get it.
3. It protects pregnant mothers and infants in your family.
4. It protects other kids and adults who have chronic medical conditions or have compromised immune systems.
5. They are safe and protect children.
*You CANNOT get the flu from the flu shot*
Getting your family vaccinated against the flu is the best way to keep your child healthy during flu season.
Don’t forget washing hands is also very important in preventing ALL illnesses in school!

Stay healthy,
Heather Eanes, RN

K-Kids Officers Elected and Inducted
K-Kids members held officer elections and officer inductions recently. Student officers were elected to these positions of leadership by the membership of the group. Officers will take the lead of future K-Kids meetings, supported by the K-Kids sponsors. Congratulations to those embarking on these leadership journeys. Shout out to all who were willing to serve in these roles.

Star Reading and Math
Your child should be able to tell you his or her Lexile level (reading). The Lexile helps match readers with print materials. At Elm Street, we do not want children's reading experiences to be limited to levels or ranges - we believe that reading should bring enjoyment as well as learning, so children are encouraged to look for good fit books that interest them. But, Lexiles are still helpful to measure a text's readability level.
Generally, children would do best to select books that fall into the range of 100L below - 50L above their own Lexile level. So, a person with a Lexile level of 350 would be able to independently read books from approximately 250-400L. Here is a link to more information about using Lexiles to match readers and books: https://lexile.com/parents-students/find-books-at-the-right-level/find-books-that-match-your-measure But, please remember, reading is about gaining meaning from print and the most meaningful reading experiences come from materials that interest us, so PLEASE do not limit your child to reading ONLY within a specific range.
Keeping your child's Lexile level in mind will help you to support him or her as a reader - the best way to grow a Lexile level is by reading! Ms. Ewing, our awesome Media Specialist, as well as your child's teacher or administrator can always share more information, too.
PBIS Celebration on 10/25
Top TEN (Traits Eagles Need)
Each month during the school year, Elm Street focuses on a specific character trait as part of our Top TEN (Traits Eagles Need).
October Trait - Initiative
The act of taking the first step
November Trait - Loyalty
Being true to your friends, family, and school
Each classroom is represented by an Eagle of the Month, a student who regularly displays the character trait for the month in his or her interactions with others. Eagles are featured on the morning news broadcast, ESN (Elm Street News) during a viewing celebration for students and parents held on the last Friday of the month.
Eagle of the Month filming for October is Thursday, October 24 at 7:35 a.m. in the Media Center (students only). Families of recognized students are invited to join us on Friday, October 25 at 7:45 a.m. for the Eagle of the Month ESN Viewing Celebration! November filming will be November 28 at 7:35 a.m. (students only) and ESN Viewing Celebration for Families will be Friday, November 29 at 7:45 a.m. Can't wait to celebrate our character!
Students, we are on the lookout for these traits!
Bus Driver Appreciation Day! Also Bus Safety Week
This is also Bus Safety Week. Elm Street students got an early start on Bus Safety, talking about bus safety during the first week of school with their specials teachers as well as practicing Bus Evacuation Drills in September.
The best way to show appreciation to your bus driver and demonstrate bus safety is showing and reinforcing our Eagle Expectations of Respectful, Responsible, and Safe behaviors on the bus.
