We Did It - Week 3 of Distance Learning Complete!

Hello Bobcat Families!

In the spirit of full disclosure, this week seems to have been the longest one yet - we don't know if it was the weather or the feeling of the unknown. That being said, what we do know is that we are a community at New Leb, and a community that sticks together when times are hard. Remember, even though we are not physically here, we are HERE for one another every day. Just a phone call, email, or FaceTime away - including us. If your child (or you) are having a hard day - reach out to your teacher or Ms. B and Mrs. Monaco. We can always hop on a call or FaceTime to catch up!

We have spent a bit of time this week scouring through all of the resources coming across our desks/email, and we wanted to pull out some of the ones we found most helpful during this time. Although they may appear un-related, we addressed topics that we feel we have heard families chatting about and looking for more information on. Enjoy at your leisure!

Where can I find that GPS Distance Learning information again? Click on the link below and then click on "Parent Resources."

I am stuck with Math - what else can I do outside of what the teacher is providing me? Ms. Irene Parisi, GPS Chief Academic Officer, put together a Messy Math Box Video where you can go through your house and create a math box.

My child just read a book - what do I do now? Check out this website which lists many questions you can ask you child after they finish reading a book (even if you have not read it!): https://www.nagc.org/how-discuss-books-your-kids.

Kahn Academy posted some great sample schedules families can use throughout their day (great to get ideas from). These are for K-12 students and provide links to some incredible resources for all students - including podcasts to listen to as a family and discuss. This is a great video for parents, children, and educators that explains how and why we may lose control of our emotions. This is a great pro-active video to watch and a wonderful learning tool! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bKuoH8CkFc.

Thank you to our 1st grade team for sharing this video about what we can do when something is hard or we just can't seem to get it...YET! The Power of Yet (good for K-3): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLeUvZvuvAs.

We hope you find some of these helpful, and please continue to reach out with any information and/or resources you are interested in. We are HERE!

Google Hangouts Meet

Google Hangouts Meet is activated for Greenwich Public Schools, and has been in use for the past two weeks across the District for small groups. Students/teachers must set-up an invitation to do a Google Hangout Meets session, and their recipient must click the link at the time/date of the meeting to join the session.

It is important to note that this feature makes meetings available to all students. Students should only accept Google Hangout Meet invitations from their teachers and ignore/block everyone else unless directed differently from the teacher. This will help ensure that this feature is used appropriately and safely by our students with an adult present. GPS is on Google for Education which keeps the features only within our GPS network.

GPS protocols for Live Video Discussions

  • Appropriate Clothing (The attire should be school-appropriate; This is to avoid a secondary student chatting in their pajamas)

  • Appropriate Place (The student should chat while at a table, desk, or learning space)

  • When online, mute the microphone until it’s time to speak. This eliminates background noise for all.

  • If the teacher utilizes a chat feature, a question can be asked while somebody is speaking through the chat.

  • If not using the camera, both students and teachers should block their cameras.

Need Help Logging into Google Meet?
