Rowland Media Center's Career Week
May 2018 - Because Adulting Is Hard Work!
What We Did All Week (and the week before)
and... all of the unexpected, amazing creations along the way! Select activities included:
Career in the Arts - The Picasso Effect Was a Happy Accident
We read Maybe Something Beautiful; How Art Transformed a Neighborhood, the story of how a neighborhood in San Diego, CA was transformed by a muralist. We couldn't make murals on Rowland (paints are expensive), so we made murals on paper taped to the tables as a collaborative effort. The kids loved it, the teachers loved it....even the substitutes loved it.
Need to Read in a Job - Book Tasting
Edge sketch effect by PicMonkey (great photo editor). We discussed the amount of reading required in any position. We also discussed the need for good manners when you went out for a meal with a selection committee. The need to read and the need for good manners were combined into a book tasting activity.
Dog Trainer - Entrepreneur
Why? Because Ms. OC adores dogs and thinks it might be a lot of fun to work with them all day! Jabula Dogs came to visit, and Kate Jackson and her mother, Sue, showed off their beautifully trained dogs, while describing what services Jabula Dog Academy offers. This is Bash, who does not seem to understand why his "mom" won't say okay to him leaving his space.
Who Knew Career Hats & Paper Dolls Would Be So Popular?
They were and pictured is a Kindergarten class proudly donning their hats. This class had a decided preference for law enforcement hats. One student professed a desire to be plastic surgeon, because he enjoys watching Botched with his mom. (Shhh....don't tell anyone, but I really like Botched, too.) Activity paired with Whose Hat Is This? A Look at Hats Workers Wear--Hard, Tall, and Shiny, Clothesline Clues To What People Do, The Underwear Salesman, etc.
Acrostic Poems About Careers
CHEF - Cooking Hamburgers Everyday For a paycheck.
By Ja'Nario who never, ever ceases to amaze me.
I Want To Be an FBI Librarian When I Grow Up (for real)
Glenda Zachary, youth services librarian from Hairston Crossing Branch, visited and talked to classes about becoming a librarian, attending library school, and a classmate who the FBI sent to library school so he could become a better researcher. It turns out J. Edgar Hoover worked at Library of Congress long before becoming head of the F.B.I.
Cuteness Overload, but no puppies, kittens, or goats in pajamas
The Pajama Program Reading Center hosted our Pre-K class for a reading party at the end of April. There were free pajamas donated by Carter's, free books from Scholastic, loads of volunteers to read to the kids, and even free transportation provided by the Reading Center. This amazing opportunity is available to all Title I schools in the area, who have PK-3rd graders who love to read.
National Library Week Celebration in the Media Center
The media center celebrated National Library Week by serving cookies to administration, staff, and faculty members to remind them they are "Smart Cookies" for using (and loving) the library. No....the stars in the picture did not spontaneously appear because the cookies were so delicious. Rather, they are provided by PicMonkey, my favorite editing tool.
