Let it Snow!
Hello Second Grade Families! I am going to combine last week AND this week in this newsletter! Time is going by too quickly! Last week we had our first field trip to see The Nutcracker! It was a great performance and I truly hope your child enjoyed it. I would love to hear some feedback on it! This week we were able to meet with our fifth grade buddies to work on a "Build a Snowman" activity. Ask your child to tell you about it. In blue folders you should find a reading activity sheet and some math practice for your child to work on over break. I also am sending home the January Book-It reading log. December reading logs will be due the week students return. Please continue to review sight words and math facts with your child. I am putting some math website links in the email part of the newsletter. Please check them out with your child! I hope that you all have a very safe winter break and I look forward to seeing everyone "next year!"
Reading
This week we worked on reading about several different holidays around the world that occur around this time of year. Please look for a booklet that we worked on in your child's blue folder. We also worked on picking out story elements based off of a story about a snow family. Please remember that AR goals need to be met by January 24th. The public library does have AR books. Some students have already met their second quarter goals! I have been increasing their goal to continue challenging them and also encouraging them to try out some non-fiction reading. Meeting their original goal is the number one priority. Anything after that is great practice!
Math
We continue to work on addition and subtraction. We are now focusing on adding three and four 2-digit numbers. Students have been learning different strategies in order to answer these problems. The packet being sent home is some practice on addition with and without regrouping. Check out learnzillion.com for new ways to teach old math. I cannot stress enough how important continuing math practice over break is.
Science
We are continuing our unit on Nutrition. We have introduced the five food groups and talked about what is included in each group and how each group helps our bodies. Please ask your child about the food groups... especially at meal time!
