Science Olympiad Team Places 2nd at Friendship Christian Invitational

Big image
The Fulton Science Academy Private School Science Olympiad Team traveled to its first out of state tournament of the season, competing in the Friendship Christian Invitational in Lebanon, Tennessee. The team left school on Friday morning and headed to the Adventure Science Center in Nashville where they participated in the “Energy Transformation” program exploring heat, light, and sound energy and a STEM Lab called CSI: Nashville in which they solved a crime using blood typing, fingerprinting, and fiber and hair analyses. Afterwards, students explored the museum including the Adventure Tower, Body Quest, and Space Chase exhibits.
Big image

The competition began early Saturday morning with 22 teams from Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia competing. Although there was tough competition, Fulton Science Academy students were called up for honors in 20 of the 23 events and the school was awarded the 2nd place team trophy behind Bearden Middle School from Tennessee. Even though the FSA B team placed 4th overall, tournament rules only allow one team trophy per school.

Head Coaches Pam Walsh and Gloria Stathos were pleased with the team’s performance. “Out of state tournaments are always a challenge,” said Mrs. Walsh. “This tournament was particularly stressful, coming less than a week after Winter break,” said Mrs. Stathos. She commended the students and coaches who used the time off to study their events and refine their devices.

Student Council hosting Soccer tournament fundraiser

To participate in the soccer tournament each student needs to fill out the form that was distributed to all eligible students and return it to the front office or your homeroom teacher, by Friday, January 15. Each participant will pay at least $3 and all the proceeds will go to Special Olympics. The games will begin the week of January 25 and will be played starting at 4:30 pm. The exact time and dates for each team will be determined once we have all the participants signed up and teams created. Randomly selected team captains will create teams with the assistance of administration. There will be two tournaments with a winning team from each. One tournament will be of students in 1st through 4th grade and the other will be of students in 5th through 8th grade.

Social Studies Fair

Fulton Science Academy has been very successful at all levels of the Social Studies Fair, with students taking first place in the state competition three times.

We are excited to see this years projects!

01/20/16 - school fair

Alliance Theatre Field Trip Pre-k-5 The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

FSAPS elementary students (Pre K - 5th grade) will be heading on a field trip on February 25th to see the The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe at the Alliance Theatre! These forms and payment are due by Wednesday, January 20th.

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is based on the beloved novel by C.S. Lewis. This magical production portrays the adventures of four siblings through the wardrobe and into the land of Narnia. Here they are caught up in a struggle between the mysterious, magical lion Aslan and the White Witch, who wants this astonishing country, its talking animals, and amazing creatures frozen in perpetual winter. C.S. Lewis’s classic of love, faith, courage, and giving, with its triumph of good over evil, is one of the most-enjoyed stories of our time.

Drama Club's The Giver Play

Students in Ms. Outler's Drama Club have been hard at work putting together FSA's first real stage play! Students have sacrificed their Friday nights and Saturday mornings to practice for the show. Special thanks goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Sukkert for their expert help with directing, set design, and costuming, as well as to parents for being flexible with rehearsal dates. It truly is a labor of love. Be on the lookout for the opening night soon!

Geo Spelling Bee

This week students in grades 4-8 will participate in the preliminary round of the National Geographic Bee. This preliminary round will take place in each social studies class and consist of seven rounds of questions. The categories this year each have a unique theme, though the questions remain over the geography of the United States, countries and capitals, as well as continents. This is a fun and entertaining way for students to show their knowledge of geography as well as spark increased interest in the subject.

There are three levels of competition: school, state, and national. Students that qualify in their classes will participate in the school-wide geography Bee in January, with the school winner having the opportunity to qualify for a chance to compete at the state geography Bee in April.

For more information about the National Geography Bee, see their website at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/ or direct questions to your child’s social studies teacher.

Mrs. James Kindergartners Counting ice cream scoops in freezing January!

SAT Verbal Club

This week the SAT Club reviewed last semester's concepts such as Pronoun-Antecedent agreement through a competitive Kahoot game. After reviewing, students read passages and worked on reading comprehension skills. Once completing questions individually, students discussed their answers and how they determined their answers.

For Your information

Uniform and locker Reminder

A reminder that all non-uniform jackets need to be taken off and left in lockers or cubbies after arriving at school. Jackets should be worn for outside recess, but must be returned to lockers or cubbies after that. Wearing a non-uniform jacket during class is a violation of the dress code, which results in conduct points.

Also, all lockers should be clean of papers and objects on the outside, except for the good luck messages for academic team competitions. All birthday congratulations may be displayed for one week.

Spiritwear Orders

The orders placed in November should be received by the end of January.

There was a slight hiccup with the holiday breaks, thank you for your patience :)

Six Flags Read to Succeed

If your child is in kindergarten through 6th grade, they are invited to participate in Six Flags' Read to Succeed Program! It is a fun incentive to get kids to read. Students need to record and log their reading over the next few months. If they submit a log with 6 hours of reading on it by Wednesday, February 24, 2016, they will receive one free ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia!

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Only students in grades K through 6 are eligible to participate
  • Review the reading log provided by your child's language arts teacher. Your child should use this sheet to record what and how long he/she reads
  • Your child must complete 6 hours (360 minutes) of recreational reading
  • Please initial each entry and then sign the reading log to verify that the 6 hours of reading has been completed
  • Your child can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books (digital or hard copy). Reading for homework or a class assignment does NOT count!
  • Students can read silently, aloud, or with an adult - you can read to your child, or your child can read to you.
