What We are Learning in First Grade
Reading- We will be focusing on story elements (character, problem/solution, setting, main events) and we will also be working on written responses to their reading! I will be teaching them to look back in the book for the information that supports what they think about the book. This is a critical skill to have for reading comprehension. You could even have your child practice at home by asking them a question (who are the characters in the story?) and having them physically find where in the book the characters are described. We will be practicing this skill throughout the month of January.
Fundations- We will be testing for Unit 7 the week we get back from holiday break. This unit has been all about glued sounds (ANG, ING, ONG, UNG, ANK, INK, ONK, UNK) and also pairing the suffix -s with words with glued sounds. In Unit 8, we will be focusing on the difference between a blend and a digraph in words.
Writing- We will be learning to write information or all about books this month in writing :)
Social Studies- We will be learning about a variety of things this month. We will be focusing back in on our country we are helping with the Heifer Project (Ukraine), as well as studying national holidays like Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Science- I am SO excited about science for the month of January. Students will be learning about the moon, the sun and the earth and the relationship between all three of them. We will be completing moon journals, studying the sun and it's effect on Earth. The kids always have a great time with this unit! :)
