A NOTE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Howard Families!
I can’t believe we are almost through the first nine weeks of school. Are you keeping up with your child’s grades and behavior performance? Have you scheduled a parent-teacher conference time with your child’s teacher? We pride ourselves on the involvement of our families and always have 100% attendance during parent-teacher conferences. Thank you for this. It is one of the things that make Howard such a great school.
We are halfway to our $14,000 Walk-A-Thon goal. We still have 10 days left to raise money. Please help us by finding a family member or friend to give a few dollars to help support our fabulous school! The money we raise goes right back to the kids and teachers here at Howard.
Next week will kick-off our swimming schedule. It is a Northwestern tradition to provide swimming during the school day for grades 1st-6th. Your child will swim for one week. Watch for communication from your child’s teacher regarding days they will be traveling to the high school to swim. We are very lucky here at Northwestern that we give this unique opportunity to our children.
Our number one priority in Northwestern School Corporation is to keep our students safe. This week, the Howard staff has been participating in A.L.I.C.E (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training. This instructor-led class provides preparation and a plan for our school on how to more proactively handle the threat of an aggressive intruder or active shooter event. Once our staff is trained we will be providing staff and students opportunities to practice how to alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. Please stay tuned for information on this. For a deeper look at what A.L.I.C.E is and the training please visit their website.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
During my lessons in fourth and fifth grade, we reviewed the definition of bullying. The students also went over the four different types of bullying. Lastly, they worked in groups to come up with ideas of what they can do to help if they see others being unkind.
The sixth-grade classes spent our time together writing letters to their future selves. This is always such a fun lesson because the kids get to thinking about their future. They do not get their letters back until high school graduation!
Have a wonderful weekend!
