Summary
The book, Speak, tells a story about Melinda, a freshman at Merryweather high school. The August before her freshman year, Melinda and her friends attend a party with seniors and beer. The party gets a little out of hand and Melinda starts to feel unfortable. While outside at the party, she meets Andy Evans, a senior. He starts kissing her and eventually ends up raping her. She calls 911. The police come and arrest many people at the party. The whole school finds out she was the one that busted the party and she loses all contact with her friends. On the first day of her freshman year she arrives friendless and gets glares from the school. No one knows the real story behind calling the police. Melinda is very depressed and skips class all the time. She doesn't speak to anyone.
