News and Information for our RCS families . . . . . 1-15-16

Early Explorers

It's the new year, and boy can we tell. The Early Explorers have been working really hard in the classroom. We have the Ice Cream and Train Station as our centers this month and the students really love them. You can see in the pictures just how cute their engineer outfits are. Also, we have been learning about books. These three year olds sure do love to read and be read to. If you stop in and see one reading be sure to ask them what we call the name of a book (title), who writes the words (author) and who draws the pictures(illustrator). These soon to be four year olds have really come a long way in such a short time and we are so proud of them!

Second Grade Skills

For the past month, the second graders have been learning several new sound spellings and have been tackling new and challenging words. They recently had to opportunity to practice their knowledge of sound spelling patterns for words with long a and o by participating in centers titled Journey Through Space and The Big Race. Students truly enjoyed the activities and are eager for the next time they can work on their reading skills in new centers.

Maker Lab Saturdays

Saturday, January 9th was our first Maker Lab Saturday at RCS. RCS will be hosting a number of Saturday events in the Maker Lab this school year. Elementary Teachers Mrs. Meredith, Mrs. Johnston and Miss Humbert hosted the first Saturday with the Mystery Bag Maker Lab Challenge. Participants were given a bag of mystery materials and supplies and were challenged to use the them to build a bridge. The bridge needed to be 12 inches long and be able to have a car cross it. Students partnered with an adult to assemble their bridges. It was wonderful seeing the students and adults exchange ideas and use different materials in the Maker Lab to create their final product. Be looking for the next Maker Lab Saturday so you and your child can come join in the fun. Look in your child’s bookbag for the announcement of the next event.
