17th Sunday of Ordinary Time
24 July 2022
Readings for today
1st Reading: Genesis 18:20-32
2nd Reading: St Paul to the Colossians 2:12-14
Gospel: Luke 11:1-13
Welcome to the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary & St Matthew
The theme that leaps off the page from today’s readings is persistence in prayer. To the modern world, that’s a very strange — almost silly — concept. If God is omnipotent, why does he need to be asked to do anything?
Pope Francis Monthly Intention: For the elderly
We pray for the elderly, who represent the roots and memory of a people; may their experience and wisdom help young people to look towards the future with hope and responsibility.
Masks at Mass...As we continue to be notified regularly from the Ministry of Health of positive cases attending Mass, we strongly encourage the wearing of masks when inside our Churches. This protects all of us from the virus. And of course, if you are feeling unwell please stay at home.
Over the past week we have farewelled a number of parishioners
Brian's funeral will be held at Assisi tomorrow (Saturday). His wife Colleen died in May. Brian and Colleen were previously St Matthews parishioners.
Jared Ewen is the youngest son of David & Susanne who have connections with the Cathedral, St Columba, and St Patricks Te Awamutu parishes. Jared was tragically killed in a car accident last Sunday. His service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at the Cathedral.
Kay Panettiere was mum to Marissa & Donna. Her Requiem was held in the parish today.
Barbara Whitlow attended the Cathedral for many years before moving to Assisi. Her funeral will be held at the Cathedral next Wednesday at 1:30pm.
Welcome to the faith community

We pray for the Ukraine...
Holy and Gracious God
We pray for the people of the Ukraine, for their country and their leader.
We pray for all those who are afraid; that your everlasting arms hold them in this time of great fear.
We pray for all those who have the power over life and death; that they will choose for all people life, and life in all its fullness.
We pray for those who choose war; that they will remember that you direct your people to turn our swords into ploughshares and seek for peace.
We pray for leaders on the world stage; that they are inspired by the wisdom and courage of Christ.
Above all, Lord, today we pray for peace in Ukraine.
And we ask this in the name of your blessed Son.
Lord have mercy.
Amen
