Walzem Elementary Library

December 2015

Happy holidays!

We hope everyone had a great holiday break! Students should be well rested and ready to get back to learning! Remember, along with reading for 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade Battle of the Books, students in Kinder through 5th grade can log reading hours for the Six Flags Fiesta Texas Read To Succeed program to earn a free ticket to use during the summer.

In December, the library was a great meeting place for robotics, PALS students, and Rackspace volunteers who worked with our students.

New Assistant!!

We now have a library assistant!!! Welcome to Ms. Veronica Nunez! She will be working for four hours in the morning only. This is a great help with shelving books and student check-outs when the librarian is working with a class. She has been working in the library as a substitute assistant for the last month, and she made our wonderful 3rd and 5th grade Battle Boards, as well as decorated our door.

Battle of the Books Kick-0ff!!

The librarian met with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes to officially kick-off our Battle of the Books program! Teachers and students are excited to read these selected books, fill-out the BOB journals, and earn prizes! Our campus battles will take place in May 2016.

Book lists are available online on our library LibGuide.

Hour Of Code

Thank you to the Rackspace volunteers who came into the library on Monday and Tuesday, December 7th & 8th, to work with students for the Hour of Code initiative! Students in all grade levels really enjoyed learning to code using the library's iPads. This is a valuable technology skill students can use now and in the future.

Alternative Energy Resource Projects

Walzem 5th graders researched energy sources and sources of alternative energy during the month of November, and presented their final projects in December. Many of these projects are on display in the library. Students did a great job of using materials they had at home to use in their projects.

Working on the Smart Board

PreK students always enjoy their time in the library because not only do they get to hear a fun story, watch educational videos, and check out great books, but they also get to play/work on the SmartBoard! This month students counted gingerbread men, sorted shapes, and matched upper and lower case letters.

Holiday Luncheon

Thank you to our Social Committee who organized our potluck holiday luncheon enjoyed by the staff on Thursday, December 17th. Teachers and staff were able to relax in the library, enjoy Christmas music, socialize, and eat various kinds of tamales and sides provided by staff members during their lunch times.

Number of Students on passes by Grade

We had 230 students sign in to the library on passes this month, which was essentially 2 1/2 weeks. Instead of a paper sign-in, students are now using an iPad to fill out a Google form. This is a learning process, therefore some students did not sign in, other students did not submit their form, and some students selected two grades instead of one, which accounts for the extra entries on our graphs.

We experienced a decrease in circulation and visits on passes due to the grade level benchmarks, field trips, and the winter break, which accounts for about 1/2 of the month.

Our library is committed to helping our students to develop a love of reading, but also to reinforce classroom learning. Besides teaching library skills, and integrating technology, the librarian also holds read-alouds and lessons with activities for PreK, Kinder, and 1st grade classes.

PreK: Gingerbread man & December holidays: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas.

Kinder: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas holiday and traditions.

1st: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas holiday and traditions.

Upcoming Events

In the month of January our library will be kicking-off our 2nd grade Fairy Tale competition! We will also have Blue Bonnet voting at the end of the month for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
