Daniel's story - VILP Spanish Embassy intern 2014-15
"Working with the Embassy of Spain was a fantastic opportunity to see the work that foreign embassies do in New Zealand first hand. The internship challenged me to put the knowledge and language skills I’ve gained so far at Victoria to practical use across a wide range of tasks. No two tasks I performed were the same and not one involved making anyone coffee! Instead the Embassy offered me experience in a number of the different capacities in which it functions. As a result I have gained real insight into the lives of Spanish nationals in New Zealand and a view into the ways in which our two cultures are interacting on a daily basis.
While it was important to have effective time management skills in order to perform tasks as promptly as possible, the Embassy was fully aware of the pressures of the university workload and was more than happy to accommodate when it was needed. Going into the internship I had worried that my Spanish, particularly the oral side of the language, would not be up to standard. However, the staff were always very warm, welcoming and more than happy to answer the many questions I had. The fact that two interns from Spain worked alongside me on occasion was an added bonus.
Overall, I finished the internship with better Spanish, some real experience in embassy work and the sense of being a part of the Spanish community in New Zealand. It is a fantastic programme which I will prize having taken part in for many years to come."
