Math Workshop
Our next unit will be on fractions. We will start out with a brief review of unit fractions and equivalent fractions. After this review, we will be focusing on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. We will also be doing some rigorous problem solving with Fosnot Best Buys, Ratios, and Rates.
Reading
In February and March 5D and 5B will soon begin our Literacy unit on Investigation and non-fiction text. We will continue our work with literature discussion groups and mentor text. We will also be utilizing a critique's corner technique and continue to build our skills in writing. The students have demonstrated growth in their analytical skills and we will continue to grow in our reading responses in terms of elaboration and extended thinking.
Mrs. Carlson’s class: All year we've been building a better reading response. The system that has really worked for my students when building better reading responses is very visual. We've been color coding our reader responses according to the success criteria we've slowly built together over the course of the year (I only add a new goal every three or four weeks - allowing for student mastery of the previous goal before we move on). These criteria are posted on a bulletin board, so the students can easily refer to it when writing their responses. We will be focusing on adding more details to elaborate and extend our thinking.
