A weekly newsletter for LVES Parents

October 16, 2015 - Issue 9

End of the 1st Nine Weeks

Can you believe that the end of the 1st nine weeks is Friday, October 23rd? The first nine weeks has flown by! Report cards will go home in Friday folders on October 30th. If you have not yet conferenced with your child's teacher, please contact them to set up a conference. Don't forget that you can check your child's grades at any time using Parent Portal.

Tax Ratification Election Community Meeting

LVISD Superintendent, Mr. Webb, will hold a community meeting on October 21 at 6:00 pm to discuss the upcoming Tax Ratification Election. If you would like to hear more about how this election will benefit LVISD, I encourage you to attend the meeting. The meeting will be held in Viking Hall.

Fire Safety Visit

LVES will welcome Northlake Fire and Rescue on Friday, October 23rd. This annual presentation is an opportunity for Kindergarten through 4th grade students to learn about fire safety. Students will have the chance to look inside one of the fire trucks! Thank you Northlake Fire and Rescue for keeping our community safe!

Vikings Read Program

Mrs. Stern, our wonderful Reading Specialist, is launching a new program call Vikings Read and she is in need of some volunteers. The purpose of this program is to have volunteers come in before school and during lunches to read with students who need a little extra practice. If you are interested in volunteering to read with our Vikings, please contact Mrs. Stern at Remember that all volunteers must fill out a background check form before volunteering at school. You can access the form by clicking on the following link:

Community Clothes Closet

LVHS and LVMS Life Skills classes are in the process of opening a Community Clothes Closet for our community in need of kids and adult clothing. Once open, the Clothes Closet will be housed in Portable 6 at LVMS. They are in desperate need of children's clothing, all sizes, and children's pants hangers. If you would like to donate any clothing items and/or hangers, you can drop the items off in our front office.

Book Character Parade

LVES will have a Book Character parade at 9:00 on October 30th. Students will need to choose a character from a book to dress as and write about. Students must have approval from their teacher for the character they choose. (No scary or violent characters, please.) Your child can represent the character as simply as wearing a pair of glasses or hat, so please don’t feel like you need to purchase anything special! Halloween costumes will not be allowed. More information from your child’s teacher will be coming home soon!

Title 1 Parent Meeting on Tuesday

If your child is receiving Title 1 Reading and/or Math services, we invite you to attend our annual Title 1 Parent Meeting on Tuesday, October 20th at 6:00 pm in the library. Come meet Mrs. Stern and Mrs. Phariss, our Reading and Math Specialists, as well as learn more about how this program benefits your child. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Jackson. We look forward to seeing you Tuesday night!

Picture Day is Thursday!

Don't forget that picture day is Thursday, October 22nd. Order forms went home in last week's Friday folders. If you did not receive an order form, additonal forms are available in the front office.

CEIC Meeting on Thursday

The first CEIC meeting of the year will be Thursday, October 22nd at 3:15 pm in the library. Members of the CEIC committee will review our current campus improvement plan, and provide feedback on our campus goals and strategies. I am still in need of 2 business members to serve on our committee. If you know of any business members who do not have a child at LVES and would like to serve on this committee, please contact Mrs. Jackson.

Running of the Vikings

Friday, October 23rd is a home football game against Cameron, so that means any student who has purchased a Running of the Vikings t-shirt this year will need to be lined up at 6:45 behind the tunnel ready to run. LVYFA players will also run through the tunnel and be recognized at this game. So if your son is a LVYFA player, he will need to wear his jersey and be ready to run at 6:45.

Marvelous Mathematician Winners

Here are the winners from last week's Marvelous Mathematician problems:

  • Kindergarten - Christopher Meyer
  • 1st Grade - Marek Michetich
  • 2nd Grade - Mariana Tonche
  • 3rd Grade - Zach Bridges
  • 4th Grade - no entry

Marevelous Mathematician problems go home every Friday, so if your child would like to show off their math skills, make sure he/she turns in completed grade level problems to Room 303.

Weekly Attendance Rate

Our attendance rate for the week of Oct. 15th:

  • 96%

Remember our weekly goal is 97%, so please make sure that your child is at school everyday from 7:45-2:45.

The end of the first nine weeks is next Friday, so be sure to read next week's LVES Weekly to see if Mr. Holt is going to get a haircut!
