Dear Lake Forest High School Family,
Happy Friday! This weekend marks the return of the Winter Formal. In talking to my AP Research students, my TA mentioned that she is looking forward to attending after so many missed opportunities over the past few years. We have all learned not to take any opportunities for granted–each and every moment, event, and conversation is a gift.
The Scout Experience
Speaking of gifts–we had an awesome showing for The Scout Experience! I popped around and saw so many smiling faces, both from our current Scouts and future Scouts. From the Activities, Athletics, and Academics tables to the building tour of so many of our instructional spaces, the excitement was palpable. Thank you to the Department of Educational Services and all of the sponsors, coaches, students and parent organizations who helped put this amazing evening together to showcase our school and welcome our community!
You may recall that last year Districts 65, 67, and 115, assessed parent, guardian, and staff interest in moving Spring Break 2023 (previously scheduled for March 20-24) later by one week. The survey was done in response to community feedback that our Districts had fallen out of sync with the dates of Spring Break in most of our neighboring communities. Survey results for staff and families in Districts 65, 67, and 115 indicated a preference for moving Spring Break one week later this year.
With this in mind, each District’s Board of Education approved moving Spring Break 2023 to March 27-31. Students missing school before or after this window in March will be considered absent. We realize some families have made travel arrangements for the earlier week that they cannot change. We will try to work with those families. Please encourage your student(s) to reach out directly to their instructors to make a plan for the week of school they will miss.
I have written about attendance on a number of occasions. Even when an absence is excused, it is still legally considered an absence by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). To retain our ISBE Exemplary designation, we must continue our focus on academics - and keep absenteeism as low as possible.
Have a great weekend, Family!

In Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life, UC Berkeley professor of psychology Dacher Keltner, Ph.D. (FAN ’16) presents a radical investigation and deeply personal inquiry into this elusive emotion. Revealing new research into how awe transforms our brains and bodies, alongside an examination of awe across history, culture, and within his own life during a period of grief, Prof. Keltner shows us how cultivating awe in our everyday life leads us to appreciate what is most humane in our human nature. Up until fifteen years ago, there was no science of awe, the feeling we experience when we encounter vast mysteries that transcend our understanding of the world. Scientists were studying emotions like fear and disgust, emotions that seemed essential to human survival. Revolutionary thinking, though, has brought into focus how, through the span of evolution, we’ve met our most basic needs socially. We’ve survived thanks to our capacities to cooperate, form communities, and create culture that strengthens our sense of shared identity—actions that are sparked and spurred by awe.
LET’S TALK | Resources for Struggling Learners
Please join us for our next LET’S TALK presentation on February 2, 2023 at 7:00 pm in the Board Room, hosted by Superintendent Dr. Matthew Montgomery.
All students have different strengths and areas for growth specific to learning styles and academic achievement. During our presentation, we will explain the available resources that all students can access through our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support framework for times when they struggle to make friends, understand a new concept, have trouble concentrating, are unsure how to start a project, need help studying for an exam or lack organization and time management skills. A panel of various support personnel will be available from District 67, District 115 and our school communities to answer questions about resources to support your child. We will also explain the process if your child may need additional assistance through a 504 Plan or an Individualized Education Plan.
Become a TA
Next fall's Juniors and Seniors: this is a credit/service opportunity for you to give back to LFHS by offering direct academic support to students in a classroom. For a minimum of 80 minutes a week, you will be helping students in a course you have already completed and will engage in direct tutorials, reteaching content, small group work, leading mini-lessons, etc.
You will receive .25 elective credits for one semester as a TA (.5 for a whole year). NHS hours may be earned for extra service hours beyond the required 80 minutes. You also need to attend a training session in August.
Please submit this application by Friday, January 13, 2023. Once you receive an acceptance email, notify your counselor when you register for classes. Your TA placement in a class will depend upon availability following the scheduling of your courses. Thank you!

We had a great time on Thursday night welcoming our new Scouts and showing them all of what Lake Forest High School has to offer. Our future Scouts were excited about all the different clubs, activities, sports and academic classes available to them. Thank you to all the families who came and to all who helped in making Scout Experience a big success!
On January 12-14, twenty seven students along with Ms. Dreiling, Ms. MacBlane, Ms. Toledano and Mr. Pulio attended the 47th Annual Illinois High School Theater Festival. This event brings together over 4,000 high school students and teachers to celebrate theater, this year on the campus of the University of Illinois. Our students enjoyed several days of workshops, performances by other high schools and even college auditions for students interested in majoring in the theater arts. The event culminated with the All State performance of Shrek: the Musical which brings together the top theater performers, technicians and musicians from around the state. This year, the All State performance included Lake Forest’s very own Ciara Carrol as the drummer in the pit band!
Congratulations to our boys basketball team, CHAMPIONS of the Lake Forest/Deerfield MLK Tournament!
