Komensky Lions Keep on Learning
Week of April 6, 2020 ~ Semana de 6 de abril, 2020
Remote Learning
We hope this week finds you and your family safe and well during Spring Break. As you may know, Governor Pritzker has extended school closures through April 30th. As such, we are excited to let you know that we are now moving from extended learning days to Remote Learning days! As Superintendent Mary Havis stated in her communication to families this week, our Remote Learning plan is modeled after the expectations released by the Illinois State Board of Education. As a district and school, we will be focusing on providing learning opportunities for all students that reflect state learning standards, allow students to confer with their teachers, and address the individual needs of our students. Most importantly, our teachers will be connecting with our students to help provide for their social and emotional needs. We understand that based on the schedules and circumstances of individual families, engagement in learning activities may be taking place at a variety of times during the day. However, we still want to partner with you in order to ensure our students continue learning during these next few weeks.
Below you will find a chart that indicates the appropriate amount of time for learning our students should be engaged before taking a break. For example, a third-grade student should spend about two hours per day engaged in learning activities, but should take a break between activities after 10-15 minutes.
Aprendizaje remoto

What should we expect?
Here are some details of what Remote Learning weeks should look like for your student:
- Our students will have three opportunities per week for interaction with our staff and classmates via a live morning meeting.
- Following the guidelines listed above by ISBE, our staff will create learning opportunities for direct instruction, guided modeling, and independent practice. Our staff will create videos for direct instruction and post them on their PowerLearning pages so that students may access them at any time of the day should they not be able to attend virtual instruction.
- Our staff will have a total of 60 minutes per day for "office hours" where our families can communicate with them to ask any questions on assignments or discuss other concerns.
- We ask of our students to first and foremost take care of themselves, review and complete assigned work in a timely manner, and engage with our teachers and class during virtual instruction as much as possible, ask questions for clarification, continue practicing positive digital citizenship, and take advantage of school supports as needed.
Grading Guidelines for Quarters 3 and 4
To the best of their ability, classroom teachers will assess critical grade level standards, IEP goals, English and Spanish language proficiencies, and characteristics of effective learners based on work submitted, interactions with students, level of participation, and documented growth during Remote Learning days. As such, all students should have the opportunity to redo, make-up or try again to complete or show progress towards schoolwork assigned
Teachers will maintain a record of student participation on a daily basis and consideration will be given to individual family situations and student availability during “regular” school hours. Participation at any point in the day and/or submission of work, even if outside the scheduled hours, indicates that a student is “in attendance” for that Remote Learning day. Please be advised that administration will be making calls to families of students not engaging in Remote Learning to determine next levels of support.
