Valentine's Day Parties
During the course of the year, we celebrate holidays and events. We have two major celebrations at Halloween and Christmas. These events involve the room mothers and parents. We do have Valentine celebrations but they do not include room mothers and parents. These celebrations take place on Valentine's Day and are coordinated by the teachers only.
You will soon receive information from the homeroom teacher as to their plans for Valentine's celebrations. If the teacher would like you to provide anything such as valentines for the children they will let you know. These celebrations are class and age-specific ensuring the children enjoy and understand the meaning of the day
2017 PROJECTCSGIRLS COMPETITION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS!
NATIONAL NONPROFIT DEDICATED TO CLOSING THE TECH GENDER GAP BY RUNNING A NATIONAL COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPETITION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS AND WORKSHOPS AROUND THE COUNTRY
Founded during the summer of 2013, ProjectCSGIRLS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in computing and technology. Their unique idea of a technology and computer science competition for middle school girls stemmed from the fact that a large chunk of learning and development occurs during the critical middle school period.
In today's world where technology is becoming increasingly prominent and essential to nearly every field of study, the aim is to instill a love for computing and technology in middle school girls. The hope is to show them how innovative and creative they can be and encourage them to develop ideas that are powerful, disruptive, and cutting edge.
The 2016-2017 program year will be the fourth one running the annual Competition for Middle School Girls. ProjectCSGIRLS has reached over 1,800 middle school girls nationally in over 35 states to date and has brought together students, technical professionals, and organizations to work towards a common goal of inspiring girls across the country to pursue computer science and technology.

Catholic Education Foundation for Tuition Assistance
As we begin a new year, I want to encourage each of you to invite more families to join the Catholic school experience than ever before. Last year with your encouragement and with the help of the CEF we were able to achieve record-breaking enrollment. We have not stopped growing and with your help we expect our enrollment to once again grow in 2017. To any family who yearns for a Catholic education for their children but cannot afford it, The Answer is YES!
The 2017-18 FACTs management application is available online at www.ceflou.org. This is the only way to apply for aid this year. The completed application, along with the $25 fee, should be submitted on or before March 15, 2017.
We are sending an instructional flyer to every St. Paul family. Asking for tuition assistance is a very private family decision. Often families who are experiencing difficulty are reluctant to take the steps needed to request assistance but let me assure you if this is the case the answer will be “Yes” to assistance.
For the past two years, every single family who applied to the Catholic Education Foundation for tuition assistance – and demonstrated a financial need – earned an award, 100%! Last year with the help of the CEF, need-based to tuition discounts, archdiocese voucher fund and school choice St. Paul families were awarded $204,256 in assistance!
Instead of talking yourself out of a Catholic education for your children, shouldn’t you consider reaching out to the Catholic Education Foundation and provide a better path for both your children and your family?
- NOW IS THE TIME for more families to join our storied Catholic school community with 106 years of tradition.

Speak Up Be Safe Program
"Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe" is a research-based, developmentally-appropriate curriculum for Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. It helps children and teens learn the skills to prevent or interrupt cycles of neglect, bullying, and child abuse—physical, emotional, and sexual. The program uses an ecological approach to prevention education by providing materials to engage parents and caregivers, teachers, school administrators, and community stakeholders.
- In addition to increasing childrens' ability to recognize unsafe situations or abusive behaviors and building resistance skills, lessons focus on helping children build a responsive safety network with peers and adults that the child identifies as safe.
- Focused on enhancing a child’s overall sense of confidence.
- "Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe" is a child-focused, school-based curriculum designed to build safety skills within the child while addressing today’s societal risks, such as bullying and Internet safety. The program focuses on enhancing the child’s overall sense of confidence with regard to safety and promotes respect for self and peers that can be applied to general as well as potentially harmful situations.
- The overarching goal of this curriculum is always to provide children with the skills to identify and be able to approach a safe adult should they ever be in a situation in which they are unsure if they are safe.
- A primary focus at the earliest age groups is to shift the responsibility for child abuse and neglect prevention away from children and onto the adults in their lives. Children learn basic concepts around personal safety and how to identify safe adults.
- Lessons emphasize that adults are responsible for child safety, but by learning and using a few key safety rules, children can help those adults keep them safe. Children learn how to recognize potentially unsafe situations, how to identify safe adults, and how to talk about feeling unsafe.
- While adults continue to be responsible for child safety, lessons acknowledge the growing responsibilities and privileges of children in this age group and the new opportunities for potentially unsafe situations. Children learn how to recognize potential risks as well as resistance strategies that can be used until they can talk to a safe adult.

Creative Learning Center News
Genius Hour!
The middle school students at St. Paul have been given an opportunity to participate in what is called “Genius Hour” over the course of this school year. This concept, adopted from Google employees, proves that people are exponentially more motivated and productive when they are allowed to choose what they work on or learn. Thus, students have one hour a week in which they come into the Creative Learning Center and take charge of their own learning. Student-chosen projects range from learning a new language to programming robots to creating products on our 3D printer. The goals that our students set and the successes that they are achieving are incredible, and most are thoroughly enjoying the process. See what a few of them had to say below.
"Genius Hour is a class where you decide what you want to learn. It gives the students the ability to be their own teacher. Students have to gauge their own success and are responsible for doing their own work. This project gives the students the freedom of learning. It makes the student more involved."
"For me, I decided to learn how to speak sign language. For the past months, I have been watching videos on some of my favorite songs in sign language. I have learned four songs' choruses and one I have learned most of the first verse of Heathens. I only have to present three of my songs, though"
- "I am studying music, and my idea originally was to write a song but now since I had a small dilemma that has slowed that process I've crafted a plan B."
- "I am doing my project on PKD (Polycystic kidney disease)... I have almost finished my slide show.
I just need to put some finishing touches on my slideshow. I am starting to practice how I am going to present and to finish this project."
"I am trying to find out how the NBA logos have changed over the time. Many teams have had the same logo for a while but some have changed their logos pretty quick."
"Genius hour... gives you the opportunity the tell your classmates and their parents about what you care about or think is really fun and interesting."
My project is to know every starter in the NBA. I have finished listing all the starters on each team. Now I just have to edit the presentation to make it look nice.
My project is about programming a robot. This robot would run through an obstacle course. In the end, I hope to make this robot run through at least three times successfully."
Legos Anyone?
Parents, if you have any Legos in your home that you no longer use, please donate them to St. Paul's Creative Learning Center!!!
Thanks,
~Jen Burba

Happy 100th Day of School!
A Quick Note from the English Room: We’ve had a busy week!
6th English: We took their vocabulary quiz today! Next week they will be taking their 30-word test so their only homework will be to study their vocabulary words. We have completed the class spelling bee. Our class winners were Tyler Keene and Jaxon Bohannon. These two gentlemen will represent sixth grade in the school spelling bee next Thursday. We continued working with verbs this week. We will be reviewing all of the material next week in order to prepare for the test. With next week being Catholic Schools Week I am pushing this test until the following week.
6th Language Arts: We have finished reading our class book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe! The students have finished the test on it so we will be watching the movie in order to compare the differences. Due to next week being Catholic Schools Week we will begin our next class book, Island of the Blue Dolphin, the following week. This is a story about a Native American girl who gets stranded in her village when a war breaks out and has to survive on her own. We have also finished the Drawing Conclusions section in our textbook and the students took a test over that material yesterday. Their January Book Reports were due today so we will begin presenting those next week. We will be celebrating 75% to AR on February 6 so some students have a lot of reading to do this upcoming week!
7th English: We took our Vocabulary Quiz today! They will take their 30-word test next week so their only homework will be to study their vocabulary homework. We will be finishing the class spelling bee today. The winners of the class spelling bee will represent the seventh grade in the school spelling bee on Thursday. We will be reviewing next week for our Compositions Test. Since next week is Catholic School’s Week, I am pushing the test until the following week.
7th Language Arts: We are halfway through our second class book, The Westing Game. The students took a quiz over the first part of the story this week to ensure they know who the characters are and how they are related to one another. Their chapters 10-12 are due today. We also finished our Author’s Purpose section in our textbook. The students took a test over this material yesterday. Their January Book Reports were due today so we will begin presenting those next week. We will be celebrating 75% to AR on February 6 so some students have a lot of reading to do this upcoming week!
8th English: The students took their Vocabulary Quiz today! Next week they will take their 30-word test so the only homework they will have will be to study their vocabulary words. We finished the class spelling bee this week. Our winners were Justin Haycraft and Bella Hughes. These two students will represent eighth grade in the school spelling bee on Thursday. The students also took their verbs test this week. We will be moving on to Adjectives and Adverbs next week.
8th Language Arts: We have finished our class book, Devil’s Arithmetic! The students are taking the final test on the book today and we will begin the movie next week so we can see the story come to life! Our next class book is called Running Out of Time by Margaret Haddix. This is a story about a girl who grows up thinking she is in the 1800s, only to find out that it is really 1995. We will be beginning this book on February 6 so please ensure your child has this book by then so that they do not fall behind. The students also took their Making Predictions Test this week. Their January Book Reports were due today so we will begin presenting those next week. We will be celebrating 75% to AR on February 6 so some students have a lot of reading to do this upcoming week!
Have a wonderful weekend!

St. Paul's Archery Team - 2nd Place!
Spring and Summer Sports Signups are Underway!
SPECIAL NOTE: St. Paul partners with Notre Dame Academy. We always hope to have enough participants for every sport on our own, but if we don’t, we will contact Notre Dame to see if we can combine students to create a team. In rare cases, our students may participate with a different school. The Sports Committee will handle the coordination and notify the signed up students of which school they can join for a particular sport. Recruiting is not allowed and a student may not participate with a different school without approval from the Sports Committee. If an athlete signs up to play for St. Paul and there are not enough participants to form our own team the athlete is NOT required to play for another school; they can choose to not participate at all. However, only students who sign up with St. Paul will be offered the opportunity to play for another school.
