Tustumena Elementary Newsletter
January 21, 2020
Dear Tustumena Families,
Reminder regarding Tustumena School's cell phone policy: We strongly discourage students from bringing cell phones to school. If you feel it is very important for your child to have their cell phone while traveling to and from school, they must keep their phones in their lockers (Powered Off) during the school day. Students found to be using or in possession of the phones on their person during the school day will have their phone placed in the office. It can be picked up from the principal by parents during business hours and will be required to be checked-in at the office from that point forward for the remainder of the school year.
After-school cross country skiing begins today, January 21st. Please see below for details. All required forms must be signed and on file PRIOR to any student participation. Permission slips are available outside Mr. Michael's classroom for students to bring home and in the office for parents to pick up. Our Cross Country Skiing club is in need of some good quality youth/kids size cross country skiing equipment. If you have any skis with length between 125-160cm and 50cm wide max, "NNN" or New Nordic Norm boots European sizes 38-44 (approximately US sizes 5-10), or poles with length 125-140cm, that you are no longer using and would like to donate them to the school, we would be very appreciative. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Please contact Mr. Michael with any additional questions.
Our Lost & Found is growing! Please be sure to check it out and have your child check for lost belongings. Smaller items are in the office so feel free to ask to see the small item lost and found. Items will be placed on a "free" table during February conferences, then donated.
We encourage confidence and independence here at Tustumena. Along those lines, students know where they are going and are responsible for getting themselves to class, so we ask parents to say goodbye to their children in the foyer. If you have a matter that you need to discuss with a teacher, you may either send a note or call to schedule a time to meet with them. This allows teachers to greet their students as they arrive and begin instruction on time. The only exception is preschool. Preschool parents may walk their children down to class between 8:45 and 9:00am for morning PreK and 12:50-1:00pm for afternoon PreK. If preschool students arrive late, a staff member will walk them to class if they need assistance. We have signs in the halls to remind you.
Have you submitted your volunteer application so you can join in on class parties or attend field trips? If not, please do so at www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us and click on volunteers. If you have difficulty accessing the internet, you are welcome to come to the Kasilof Public Library (in our school) during their hours Monday-Friday 2-5pm and use the computers in there. We would love to have you join in on classroom activities, but this is a district requirement before you can participate. You are welcome to call the school at 260-1345 anytime to make sure you're "on the list".
Request for science stuff from Mr. Hayman:
Howdy. I will be working with the fifth grade classes on an electricity unit soon. It will be a “hands on” center but I could make it a lot more fun if I had enough supplies to send materials home with the students so they could continue to explore. If you have any of the following list available and are open to donating it to school, maybe we can send everyone home with their own project.
Materials needed:
- · Small LED lights
- · Large magnets (like from the back of speakers or microwaves)
- · Enamel covered copper wire (#18- #12 size is big enough
Thank you.
Doug Hayman
