What is inside a computer?

There are lots of different components inside a computer.

SSD/Hard Drive

A Hard Drive is used to store memory, files, application, etc. on the computer and other software’s, when you save or change data. And has moving parts to write information on the hard drive.

A SSD (Solid State Drive) = it is also to save memory, but it is much smaller and more expensive to buy than a hard drive. And it has no moving parts.

CPU (Central processing unit)

A CPU is short for the Central Processing Unit. It gives instructions for what the computer to do something. It is attached on to the Mother Board. And has a fan to stop it over heating.

Optical Drive

An Optical Drive is a piece of equipment that reads or write information on a disc (blu-ray disc player, DVD players, CD players, etc.). By using laser passing through the disc and it reads the data in the disc.

RAM

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly, and is usually fast. The RAM is connected to the Motherboard.

Monitor

It displays what you see on the screen, and what is happening on it. Without it, it would be very hard to see what is going on the computer. And when you watch a video or play a game it processes what is happening onto the screen.

Motherboards

The Motherboard is the main pieces of hardware on a computer. It is basically like the brain of the computer, that controls evrything. The CPU is fitted dirctly on top of the Motherboard and others like RAM are connected to it by wires.

Inputs/Outputs

An input device is something that puts information inside a computer. E.g. A mouse on a computer is an input device as when you move the mouse and click on things it tells the computer what to do.

An output device is something that can display information. E.g. A monitor is a output device as it takes information and display it on the monitor for you to look at.

Touch Screens

A touchscreen is when you can use some object to move or control a screen. Without a mouse, point, etc. E.g. An iphone 5 is a touch screen.
