Baccalaureate Ceremony - Need your input
Attention Seniors and Parents:
The Counseling Office wants to recognize all of our seniors who have been given a scholarship at our Baccalaureate Ceremony on May 17.
Please complete this form to report any and all scholarships your student has received so far. Even if your student does not plan to attend a school that has awarded them scholarship $, please still include that information in this form. All scholarships received are a recognition of the hard work your student has done.

A Message from the Senior Parents: Senior parent volunteers needed
Parent-sponsored graduation events have been a Handley tradition for many years. These are not school events. They are completely organized and funded by parents of seniors.
An ice cream social will be provided to seniors after their graduation practice on May 19th.
On Tuesday, May 23rd starting at 3 pm, parents will host the following and volunteers are greatly needed:
- Costume Contest- Groups of 2-4 kids dress in a theme. The creativity of the kids has been amazing. We have 3 community leaders act as judges and cash prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
- Scavenger Hunt- Kids receive a safety lecture from police and rules are outlined. They are then provided a packet with items to scavenge and photograph, historical locations to find, videos to create and riddles to solve. Photos are texted to parents who score the hunt. Cash prizes for winners.
- Picnic- Food is donated and served to all the hungry seniors as they return from hunting.
- After Party- Live band, DJ, ice cream truck, photo booth, games, prizes and giveaways
Donations of food and items for these events will also be needed. A sign-up genius link will be provided closer to the event. If you own/manage a restaurant or store and can supply something in large quantity, please let us know.

After School Academic Support - You can win a prize!
At John Handley High School we are committed to helping our students reach their full potential and to do so we are continuing our after school academic support program and adding a twist. This flier shows the subjects available for after school support and their locations. Additionally, this flier shows the prizes students can earn just by attending after school support! How cool is that?
Students should be in the after school academic support classroom by 3:20 pm and stay until 4:20 pm. After school buses are available. For every day of attendance they will earn a ticket for a raffle prize. There will be weekly prize drawings. Students that attend 5 remediation sessions will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize at the end of the year. For every 5 sessions a student attends after school academic support, they will receive one chance for the grand prize!
Career Exploration Opportunities
Every month there will be Career Exploration Field Trip opportunities for 11th and 12th grade students to sign up for. The first field trip is to Tri-State Nissan on Thursday, March 30th. We will get a tour of their facilities and learn about career opportunities in areas such as sales, service, management, etc. The second field trip is to Continental on Friday, March 31st. We will get a tour of their facilities and learn about entry level career opportunities. Continental produces high end synthetic leather materials which are used in transportation, recreation and hospitality markets. The location here in Winchester produces materials specifically for Tesla!
Parent/guardian signature is required. You must turn in a permission form to Ms. Hall @ JHHS or Ms. Weinstein @ EGSIC to attend.

Coffee with a Company - March schedule
In March, we will be finishing up our "Coffee with a Company" series. This series is for interested 10th, 11th & 12th graders during Advisory on Wednesdays from 11:35-12:05pm.
The format will be a 10-15 min presentation about the company and employment opportunities available (now & in the future) followed by questions and networking over coffee & pastries. Students received an email with a link and MUST sign up to attend. Maximum capacity will be 15-20 students.

Bank of Clarke County Career Exploration Event - April 14, 2023
Bank of Clarke County is hosting a Career Exploration presentation for students to attend on April 14th from 10-1230 at their downtown location. Lunch will be included & transportation will be provided.
The departments that will be presenting are: Retail Banking, Commercial Lending, Data & Analytics, Trust & Investments, Human Resources. Others attending: Branch Manager, Chief Financial Officer, and a Recruiter. (Possibly others as well) There will be dedicated time for a question and answer session.
If you’re interested in learning more about the banking industry, please see Ms. Weinstein to sign up.

Navy Federal “Classroom to Office” Mentorship Opportunity for 23/24 School Year
Economic and Personal Finance students are selected through an application process to participate in this project-based mentorship program. Students will be paired with a Navy Federal mentor who they will work with onsite at Navy Federal during the Spring semester. The pair will develop a project to be presented to school and Navy Federal leadership at the end of the school year.
There will be an information session during Advisory on Wednesday, March 15 to discuss details of this program and the application process. Students that have selected EPF as a course for next year will be invited to attend.

Summer Economics and Personal Finance Class

The application for 2023 American Legion Auxiliary VA Girls State is available and will be sending ONE student sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. The program will take place June 18 – 24, 2023 at Longwood University in Farmville, VA.

2023 VSBA Student Essay Contest: $500 Scholarship Opportunity
The Virginia School Boards Association is holding a personal essay/speaking contest where the finalists will have an opportunity to present before an audience of more than 300 school board members and administrators at the 2023 VSBA Conference on Education held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa at Short Pump on July 13, 2023.
This is the third year the Virginia School Boards Association will hold this contest with hope that this contest will bring out the very best in students’ writing and speaking efforts to allow our attendees to witness examples of the bright, thoughtful, and accomplished students from around the Commonwealth. This year's topic is The Meaning of Civility.
Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous sponsor, the top finalist will receive a $500 scholarship. Submissions are open to all Virginia public high school students (grades 9-12) as a great opportunity to share their unique voices as well as compete for funds to further their education.

Academy Day 2023
In addition, students will be able to meet with officials from all five academies as well as representatives from the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board, ROTC programs, Randolph-Macon College, the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership at Mary Baldwin University, the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, and the Virginia Military Institute. Staff from Virginia Congressional offices will be available to answer questions regarding the application procedures for congressional nominations.

National Youth Science Camp Application Open
The National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp) is a residential science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) program designed to honor and challenge some of the nation’s rising student leaders and provide them with opportunities to engage with STEAM professionals and participate in exciting outdoor activities. The 2023 NYSCamp, hosted by the National Youth Science Academy, is a hybrid experience, with students participating virtually for the first five days, followed by two and a half weeks in-person.
Two students will be selected to represent Virginia as delegates to the NYSCamp. Eligibility has been extended for the 2023 NYSCamp to include current Juniors and Seniors. February 28th is the deadline to apply, and applicants will be notified by March 15th if they were selected.
- Virtual dates are June 19, 2023 to June 23, 2023
- In-person dates are June 24, 2023 to July 23, 2023.

One of our library student aides is planning a full week of Earth Day crafts using commonly discarded items from home. She is collecting milk cartons, plastic gallon jugs, 2-liter or 1-liter plastic bottles. Please rinse these out before bringing them to the front office. Let them know they are for the library.
If you have any arts & crafts materials that you no longer want (primer for painting, small wood scraps, contact paper, self-adhesive wall paper or shelf-liner paper, scrapbooking supplies, stickers, florals, pipe cleaners, buttons, poster board, any kind of glue/modge podge, etc.), we would love to help you with your almost-spring cleaning!

PBIS Student Expectations
JHHS will begin a virtual rewards program for students during the month of October through the PBIS Rewards platform. This is very exciting news!! Students now earn reward points for demonstrating desired behaviors according to our Handley PRIDE expectations!!
When an administrator, teacher, or staff person acknowledges a student demonstrating these behaviors, they can now award them points through the PBISRewards website. All students have an account that they can access at PBISrewards.com or through CLEVER. At this time, the points that students earn will allow them to qualify for incentives. We hope to expand this effort by finding ways wherein students can “spend” their points, more to come on that! Please support this effort by encouraging your students to meet our school wide expectations each and every day!
The Handley Parent Teacher Student Organization (the PTSO) works to strengthen relationships between families and faculty. We do this by sponsoring events, volunteering at school, and supporting our kids, teachers and staff.

Quarantine Classroom Guidelines
Students that are quarantined and have classes at John Handley High School will follow the John Handley High School bell schedule.
Students that are quarantined and take courses at the Emil & Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center will follow the Innovation Center bell schedule.
HANDLEY ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT NEWS
EACH school year, a NEW VHSL physical is required and must be dated after May 1, 2022 for participation in any 2022-20223 sport. You must also complete all athletic forms. Families can learn more by visiting this webpage. In short, we provide the promo code, and Comcast, ultimately, determines eligibility. School Social Workers will have the necessary information to provide assistance to a family who would like to apply.
All seniors need the meningitis vaccine, please turn in your record of vaccine to the nurses clinic.
If your student would like to receive tylenol, ibuprofen or pepto bismol during the school year please send in an unopened bottle with their name and signed authorization form.
Any student requiring prescribed medication during school hours please complete the Student Medication Authorization. Form needs to be signed by the health care provider.

Handley Parking Permit
Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. If you are going to be driving to school for the 2022 -2023 school year and parking in the Handley parking lot, you must obtain a parking permit. You may only park in your assigned spot during school hours. If you fail to park in your spot, break any parking lot rules, and/or are chronically late to school, you may lose your privilege to park in the lot and anywhere on school property.
