A Message from the WSD Administration

There’s an App for That!

by Greg Marino

After catching my breath and nursing some sore muscles from the Williston Runs 5K (A personal goal of mine is to be able to run a 5k without the sore muscles part - but not there yet!), it was great to get back to school for an exciting week of so many special events happening around the District. When attending these events, or just hearing about them, it always makes me think, “Wouldn’t it be great if more people could know about and experience the amazing things that are happening at ABS and WCS each and every week?” By more people, I’m not just thinking of residents of the greater Williston area, but also friends, family, relatives, and educators around the globe. As examples, the CSSU Jazz festival, WCS Spring Concerts, CY Mentoring Barbecue, and the WCS Art Show are just some of the special events happening this week. Advances in technology have made it possible for us to figuratively take the walls and ceilings off our learning and not only share what we are learning and doing, but also learn a great deal from what others are doing. This is where we are headed in education and learning. It is no longer responsible to practice what we do as educators and learners within our own silos or individual communities. We need to do our part to push and reach well beyond the walls of our schools to share our amazing Williston story as well as benefit from the amazing stories of others around the globe. There are many rich examples of this happening around the District to learn from and build upon. Williston educators have a spirit of continuous learning, collaborative sharing, and operate from a growth mindset. These traits align beautifully with the goal of opening our teaching and learning to the broader world around us.

With this context in mind, I am pleased to announce the launching of the new Williston School District App. This App will serve as one tool for Williston families to stay more easily and conveniently connected to happenings at school. Attached below you will find a flyer for the new App, with directions for downloading to an Apple or Android Smartphone device. The App contains much of the most frequently accessed information found on our website, but in a more mobile-friendly format. We hope you will download the free App and begin exploring the content. We expect that families will find it a handy tool in staying connected with school. Just this morning, I used the calendar feature on App to check the start time of the WCS Art Show tonight. Another key feature of the App is the option for users to receive “notifications” from the school via text. We will use this feature as an additional method of communicating important information to WSD families. You can choose to enable this feature on your device or not. The automated phone and email communication system, BlackboardConnect, will continue to be used as well so that we can assure no families are missing important information. You can adjust the notifications settings on the App at anytime. Though we are pleased with the App as it stands now, we expect to be adding features and content to the App over time. As you explore and get used to accessing the App, please do not hesitate to share any feedback you have with me. Our goal is to make this tool as functional for WSD families as possible. So, when someone asks, “How do you stay connected with everything happening at your child’s school?”, you can confidently answer, “There’s an App for that!”

What is the role of House Representatives in FAP and our schools?

Volunteers from each house serve as part of the FAPAC. These parents/family members serve as a parent voice in FAP within the context of FAP’s role in our schools. In past years, parents have passed along concerns around school parking and after-school pick-up, school dances, teacher/staff appreciation week, needing more education on a topic, etc. This is not intended as political representation or advocacy beyond the scope of what FAP works to accomplish each year (funding school activities, community events, educational grants, etc). As with any parent group, we are not lobbyists. FAP will communicate about issues and changes that are facing our students and communities, and does not take a stance on given issues.

FAP Family Input Survey 2016

Your feedback and input is important to us, and helps us plan for next year. If you have not had a chance to do so already, please Click HERE to complete this year's survey.

How can I be involved in FAP? All families are partners in our schools in different ways. Through FAP we are fortunate to have a number of options for being involved - accommodating various schedules, time commitments, and skill sets.

to the annual ABS ART SHOW!

Wednesday, May 25th 2016

6:00-8:00 pm

All artists in grades K-2 have chosen a favorite artwork to share with you and our school community. This is an exciting celebration of each person’s efforts and achievements in art. There will be refreshments in the cafeteria. Thanks to all who have already sent in your contribution slips and in advance to all who will. Your support in this endeavor is genuinely appreciated!

Please know that although each child chooses just one piece to exhibit, all art work will be sent home in June. There may also be other work hanging in the school but your child’s choice will be clearly marked with an art show label and hanging in the halls or in the display cases. If there is uncertainty regarding the location of the work, please be sure to ask me.

We look forward to seeing you at this festive community event!
