Ryan Alcott - Gloucester County Officer of the Year
Our district is proud to announce that our own school resource officer, Patrolman Ryan Alcott of the Woodbury Police Department, was honored Monday evening with the highly coveted award of Gloucester County Officer of the year. The annual award goes to only one recipient among a large pool of candidates from each police department in the county. Officer Alcott, who joined the Woodbury Police Department in 2013, has been an indispensable asset to our schools and the larger Woodbury community.
Officer Alcott is charged with the responsibility of keeping many children and staff safe in our district’s schools…..however, Officer Alcott does so much more. In the short time that he has been our school resource officer he has taken the time to forge strong relationships with students and staff. He punctuates the importance of earning trust and respect with students that may be otherwise difficult to reach. You might see him playing a game of basketball with students, functioning as a mentor in the Leader in Me program, supporting the students at Evergreen in the Better Man program, or helping students with homework in the BLUES Brother’s program at Walnut….just to name a few. Students share that they find motivation in working with Officer Alcott. He has inspired students to seek community service in the larger Woodbury community and has even managed to recruit a few into the junior police academy held over the summer.
In the community, Officer Alcott serves on the advisory board for the Hispanic Family Center of Woodbury. He has made a personal goal of increasing his proficiency in Spanish and has already begun “giving back” to his community through his advocacy for Hispanic families. Additionally, Officer Alcott routinely assists in our school’s own ESL program.
BIG SHOUT OUT TO OFFICER RYAN ALCOTT! We at Woodbury City Public Schools feel that you are truly deserving of this award and appreciate all you have done for our students and our community!
Pre-Prom Assembly
We will be having a student-driven Pre Prom Assembly next Friday for all students who are going to the Prom. The assembly will be during 1st and 5th periods (E & D). During 1st period, the Woodbury Fire Department will be holding a mock crash scene rescue/recovery in the upper parking lot. During 5th period there will be a special assembly in the auditorium that is mandatory for anyone attending prom.
Parents - please note that students attending prom are permitted to leaving after the assembly on Friday, but must bring in a note from their parent for their early dismissal no later than Wednesday, May 15. No exceptions to this rule will be made.
Update - Henry McIntyre and the Governor's STEM Scholars Program
Here is the abstract from his research report:
By 2088 fossil fuels will be depleted and alternative energy sources will be required. To minimize the environmental impact, it is essential to find an eco-friendly choice. So far, land-plant oils and feed-stock-derived fuels exhibit potential as substitutes for fossil energy. Yet, these alternatives are far from ideal, as their crops are costly to maintain and provide low lipid yields.
This research assesses the viability and sustainability of biofuel from algae, specifically macro algae collected from the New Jersey coastline. Algae require little to no care and does not constitute a major feed stock. At their lowest yield, algae produce over ten fold more lipids than land plants[2].
Two strains of algae from the Sandy Hook area are collected, and their triglycerides extracted for transesterification, a process which yields fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), better known as bio-diesel. Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is used to determine algae competency as fuel source by identifying and quantifying FAMEs of the resulting bio-diesel.
New Jersey is rich in algae biodiversity. Taking advantage of this natural resource to synthesize fuel will allow the state to decrease its environmental impact, while increasing eco-friendly revenue
Junior High Career Day
Each year, in an effort to help students understand the connection between school and the world of work, Ms. Walsh, Woodbury’s Junior High School Counselor, organizes a Career Day for students in grades 6 through 8. This year, Career Day will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019. There will be over twenty professionals from a variety of career fields who will be meeting with our students to provide information about what their job entails as well as the paths they have taken to get to where they are today. Some occupations that students will be exposed to at this year’s event include crime scene investigation detectives, a variety of entrepreneurs, WCPD K9 Unit, firefighters, musicians, a published author/illustrator, digital forensics technician, crime scene clean up, engineers, and even a popular YouTuber, as well as many others! Students get to select the speakers that appeal most to them so they can be truly engaged in the day. We are so grateful that these professionals have chosen to volunteer their time to the career education of our junior high school students!
Noteworthy Happenings From Mr. Howey:
Congratulations to the softball team team on their win over Paulsboro yesterday. Rachel White threw a five-inning one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and one walk to lead Woodbury to a 10-0 win over Paulsboro.
Morgan Tripodi went 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBI and Nicole Rodgers recorded two hits and two RBI. The softball team has won the conference and with a 13-5 record and ranked #8 in the state for Group I.
Congratulations to Brady Shute and Isaiah Bailey. Brady finished 2nd in the 3200 and Isiah had a 3rd place in the Gloucester County track meet yesterday.
Best of luck to our middle school track team who travel to Collingswood today to compete against Audubon and Collingswood.

Project Graduation
Project Graduation is a safe and free night of fun for our graduates. It has been a part of Woodbury High School for many years. For the last six years Project Graduation has been held at Rastelli’s Sports & More in Deptford, NJ.
The night of graduation, our graduates return to the high school approximately 9pm. The students and parent volunteer chaperones are bused to the venue. For the next 3-4 hours the graduates enjoy many activities such as a photo booth, basketball, swimming, Gaga Ball, volley ball, Tether ball and a live DJ. Food is provided for all graduates at the venue. In years past, we raised enough funds to give participating graduates a small gift of a Wawa gift card and a Project Graduation t-shirt. At approximately 1:30 am. the students and volunteers are bussed back to the high school.
All costs, including transportation to and from the venue, are covered through fundraising efforts and donations.
The 2018-2019 Project Graduation Committee consists of only 9 parent volunteers. Fundraising has been particularly challenging this year. Our efforts have not raised as much money as we have hoped for at this point. Having so few volunteers makes it difficult to raise the needed funds.
We need your help! It doesn’t matter if your child is in elementary school, 6th, 7th, 8th grade or in the high school. Please join us at our next meeting. If we don’t get more volunteers, we fear there will be no Project Graduation for our graduates this year.
