In the Classroom

What a fun week it is going to be in first grade! We will celebrate our 100th day of school this week! To celebrate being 100 days smarter, we are enjoying a special snack. Thank you to those who sent in an item to help! In addition to a snack, we are going to read books about the 100th day of school, play games, and participate in activities that involve the number 100!

Today we participated in an intruder drill. I was so impressed with the students maturity and positive attitudes during the drill! Most students already understood that an intruder drill is when we practice being safe inside our classroom.

Students at Sweeny are encouraged to participate in a toy drive for People Helping People. Bring in new or gently used toys that you don't want or need anymore. These toys will go on the birthday shelf at People Helping People and bring joy to a child in need!

Learning This Week

Word Work- This week's sight words are: her, tell, after, white, green. This week's word pattern is -ell (yell, sell, fell, smell, swell, bell, etc.)

Reading- This week students will explore the main idea in nonfiction stories. The main idea is described as the big idea or what the story is mostly about. By the end of first grade, students should be able to describe the main topic and idea using key details in the story.

Writing- This week students will explore writing nonfiction pieces. Students will learn what a fact is and how to generate and write facts. By the end of first grade, students should be able to write informative/explanatory texts with a topic, facts about the topic, and a closure.

Math- Students will explore teen numbers by adding, subtracting, and finding unknown partners. By the end of first grade, students should be able to demonstrate strategies for adding and subtracting within 20.

Science- This week students will learn about the human body and some of it's functions!

Last week's class attendance: 97.31%

Our attendance goal for Sweeny is 96% or higher attendance. In our classroom, we are trying to earn an attendance celebration. Every day that we have 100% attendance we earn a letter. When we spell "perfect attendance," we will celebrate! "If you're not at school, you're not learning!"
