Tiger Tales

Taft Elementary Newsletter - December/January

A Note from the Principal

We are rapidly approaching the end of our first semester. The construction continues on both sides of our school, but the students and staff have adapted to the ongoing changing scenery. We are hoping to have our kitchen renovation completed by the time we return from Winter Break. There has not been any official word on the new gym, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that it will be completed when we return from Spring Break.

Thank you to all of our parents and community that have been so patient and understanding as we've implemented the new security precautions at Taft. About three weeks ago, we went "live" with a new system that requires all guests to "buzz in" to the building via a camera and request building access. Our office staff (especially Mrs. Merry) have been amazingly diligent with getting familiar guests in the building with minimal wait time. It is a bit of a delay, but well worth the added security at our building.

Lace Up Your Shoes for the Annual Christmas Run

The annual YMCA Christmas Run is one of the best family events of the year. This year, it is being held on Saturday, December 22nd at 10:00. Participants can choose to walk/run either a 1-mile Reindeer Dash or a 2-mile course. Runners are sent off with a Ho, Ho, Ho from Santa Claus, get to hear carolers on the race route, and are treated to hot soup and bagels after the race. Doesn't that sound like something YOU want to do?!

It's not too late! If you'd like to join the Taft Tiger Team, please download and complete the attached form. (Or drop by the office for a hard copy.) Thanks to the generosity of the team at the YMCA, our Taft Tigers (kids and adults) receive discounted entry fees. Children can run for $12 and adults for $20. This is an amazing deal and worth every penny! If you need assistance for your child to participate, please have them drop by the office to see Mr. Lowe for a scholarship form. Don't delay, though. All forms must be returned by Friday, December 14th to receive the discounted rate. (That's THIS Friday!)

English Language Center

Perhaps some of you have noticed that we have a lot of adults on our campus that do not speak English. We are partnering with Boise's English Language Center to offer adult English classes in the portable that is used by Kid City after school. They teach two classes during the day and another one in the evening. The classes are currently targeting adults that have been in the country for less than five years.

When we return from winter break, we expect to begin offering English classes to our parent community. If you know a family that would like to participate in adult English classes, please let them know that we will be sending out more information in early January. We are hoping that if we can increase our parents' English skills, it will further improve communication with all of our parents.
