Who can beat this Minute to Win It Challenge?
PHS Alumni Basketball Tournament was a HUGE Success!
By: Ryan Lord
The first ever alumni tournament is in the books and was a great success! Thanks to all the participants and the great crowd that came to cheer everyone on. It was a great afternoon of catching up with old friends and re-living some basketball swagger. Congratulations to Team 020304 on the big win! There was some great competition! Big shout-out to the following for their individual awards:
Tournament MVP - Andrew Hoskins
Old Guy Award - Mike May
Spirit Award - Cody Flores
Effort (and mvp runner up) Award - Courtney Graham
The tournament was planned and executed by the PHS Sports Media Class. The money they earned will go towards a field trip next month to the College Basketball Experience and The Sprint Center. I asked a couple of students about their experiences planning the alumni tournament. First, I talked with Darius Rawlings. His job in planning was developing rules, a bracket, and many other things. During the game he worked the clock and was part of the Sports Media team that played the last game against the tournament champions. D’s favorite part of the day was the end when they won!
I also spoke to Diego Ortiz. He and DeRon Burnside created games for kids to play in the commons. He was happy to be able to make it to the gym for the last game!
Gannon Steggall was the DJ of the event. The players were loving the tunes and lining up with requests.
Jake Turley, creator of the PHS: Then and Now video, was happy to see so many people there.
The students all agreed that the best part of the tournament was the game winning three point buzzer beater by Joe Turley in overtime to win against the alumni champs. Mrs. Collins said she was happy the whole thing was so successful. It sounds like it took a lot of hard work. They began preparing a month before. She was most impressed with the way the students took ownership of the event from start to finish. That's awesome! Thank you to all the teams that signed up to play last Sunday and all the folks that came to watch!

The history of March Madness!!!!
By: Bradley Dunivan
First we have to go back to where it started. March Madness was born in Illinois as a small high school boys basketball invitational in 1908 that evolved into a nationwide tournament featuring 900 teams in the 1930's. The first winner of March Madness was Oregon in 1939. But now it is a college tournament that features 68 teams.
One of the biggest parts of March Madness is trying to pick a perfect bracket. A perfect bracket is where all the winners are predicted before the tournament takes place. Easy enough, right? Wrong. No one has ever had a perfect bracket! One person has picked 36 correct games in a row before, but in the end his bracket lost. Scientists say that you have a 1/9,223,372,036,854,775,808 chance of predicting a perfect bracket.
In my opinion... Villanova will be the big winner! Maybe I will have the first perfect bracket!

Scary Weather
On March 5th, a big storm front hit Plattsburg that caused damage and a power outage. That day there was a mass trap shoot meet for FFA teams at KCTA. It was cut short by a tornado warning and everybody was taken downstairs to a shelter while the storm took place. Staff member, Scott Adams, had a tree limb go through his windshield.
What was expected to be a rainy day with some thunder turned out to be a very destructive night with tornadoes that caused a lot of damage. Many homes in the district were damaged and there were power outages. There was no damage caused to the CCR3 school buildings. Below are a few pics from the area.
