Big picture

Updates to our Guest Teacher Loyalty Rate Procedure

We previously shared with you that we were increasing our day-to-day sub rates over last year to $120 per day AND if the guest teacher works for the district for more than 20 days on a day-to-day basis that we would bump the teacher up to the loyalty rate of $125. Well, we have even better news for those that place an emphasis on working for DPS109. Simply put, we are not restarting the daily rate like we have done in past years. If you worked more than 20 days last year and earned the higher loyalty rate, then we are keeping you at the higher rate on day 1 of this year which is $125. This only applies to day-to-day subbing opportunities and does not include long-term subbing roles.

"Leader in Me" here in DPS109

In DPS109, we have two Leader in Me Schools; Kipling Elementary School and Walden Elementary School. You may be asking, "what is Leader in Me?"

Leader in Me is an evidence-based, social-emotional learning process, developed in partnership with educators, that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. It is based on principles and practices of personal, interpersonal, and organizational effectiveness. Distinct in several ways, Leader in Me starts from a powerful premise, every child possesses unique strengths and has the ability to be a leader, which shapes the views of staff to value and develop the whole child. This whole-school improvement model integrates leadership development into existing programs, curricula and traditions and serves as a foundational operating system for the school, improving relationships, transforming culture, and motivating staff and students. All stakeholders are impacted by Leader in Me, starting with the staff of a school, then expanding to students, their families, and the community at large. This Inside-Out Approach is a key ingredient to successfully creating positive change in a school.

The program is very strong and highly revered in both schools. Any attempt that you can make to familiarize yourself with the principles of the Leader in Me program would be extremely beneficial to the instruction and support you provide when serving as a Guest Teacher at either Kipling or Walden.

We Never Fully Understand What's Happening in our Students' Lives...

At the 2018-2019 Institute Day held for our educators on August 16, Dr. Scott Schwartz, our new Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning, and Innovation, challenged us to look into the hearts of our students and try to feel what they feel. Invest time in understanding their struggles, hopes, fears, and joys. How would we treat them if we knew what was in their hearts? How would your day be different? Would it be just another day? Please take a few moments to reflect on the video included below.
